Dr. Norman W. Klump is a stalwart among leaders of national (United States) mission in the United Methodist Church. Raised in a church home in Michigan, his higher education was received in Naperville Illinois at North Central College and Evangelical Theological Seminary related to the Evangelical Church (later Evangelical United Brethren). North Central College awarded him honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1957. His pastoral ministry was devoted to three churches of the Michigan Conference (Ev. and EUB) where he also became active in the local and regional organizations of Family Service and the Michigan Temperance Foundation.

In 1955, Norman was elected by his Annual Conference to a four year term of Superintendent. This opened doors to leadership in various ecumenical ministries which he pursued throughout his active ministry. He was a director of the Michigan and Detroit Council of Churches. In the 1960's when urban ministries was high on the agenda of most Protestant denominations in the U.S., he devoted himself with other denominational leaders to the founding of the national Urban Training Center based in Chicago. He served as secretary of the Board of Directors of the Center for nine years. In 1972, be became the Founding President and served for seven years as Chair of the Board of Directors of Global Health Action.

In 1959, Dr. Klump was elected Secretary of Urban Church and Church Extension for the EUB Church. In 1967, he was elected General Secretary of the National Division of the Board of Missions of the denomination. Following union with The Methodist Church in 1968, he was appointed Assistant General Secretary of the Board of Global Ministries. He headed the unit on Institutional Ministries of the Board until his retirement in 1975. Upon retirement he took up residence in Dayton, Ohio and served as a program consultant to the General Council on Ministries and gave leadership to the formation of urban pastoral training and extension programs of United Theological Seminary.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Klump has been known as an innovator. He started the first family camp in the EUB Church, established a trust fund for missions and church extension in the Michigan Conference, developed a conference wide stewardship program, organized a Mission and Evangelism Conference for the denomination, designed a self study manual for local churches and completed over 400 church assessments between 1960 and 67, helped inaugurate the EUB Missions and Advance Program which raised $5 million in second mile mission giving between 1960 and 67, pioneered the group ministry concept for strategic missional settings, and established the Center for Parish Development (Chicago) for training laity and clergy for more effective ministry.

For his able executive management of national mission program, his innovating mind and spirit in stimulating new program ventures to strengthen the church in ministries to the unserved and underserved populations, his ecumenical commitment especially his desire to see the vision of the Methodist and EUB union fully realized in revitalized mission and ministry, his commitment to training and development of pastors and laity for ministry in challenging mission contexts, and his encouragement and support of future leaders of the church, Dr. Norman W. Klump is presented the Frank Mason North Distinguished Mission Service Award.
