1998 Edition No. 3 - Schools of Christian Mission

This special edition of Mission Magazine features United Methodist work in the ecumenical mission study themes: Indonesia, and, Refugees and Global Migration. In addition, it introduces the spiritual growth life study, The Bible: Part I.

The Indonesia segment shows the work of the Methodist Church of Indonesia and the Karo Batak Protestant Church, both of which are supported by The General Board of Global Ministries. The Karo Batak Protestant Church continues its heritage from the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Rev. Sonny Cornelius guides the viewer through the important work of these churches.

The Refugee segment shows United Methodist work in resettlement. It focuses on a refugee resident family of Sierra Leone who were in Gambia and resettled by the Berea Ohio United Methodist Church. Refugees from Bosnia and nations of the former Soviet Union are also resettled through UMCOR.

The spiritual growth life study explores the origins of the Bible and the meaning of the Bible in people's lives today.

An agricultural missionary, Don Cobb, works with small farmers in Kenya to improve their subsistence agriculture.

Restart: an effort to help the homeless in Kansas City. 6,000 volunteers work with a United Methodist pastor, Rev. Stuart Whitney, to meet the needs.

Sustainable agriculture: Denise O'Brien is an Iowa farmer and United Methodist laywoman who promotes small-farm sustainable agriculture globally. "Farming should be a ministry that both provides for the needs of people and respects the earth and God who created it".

An excerpt from a new video, Love, Justice, and Service: The Ministry of Deaconesses. It shows some of the variety of ministries which challenge women to enter the Order of Deaconess.

This first 1998 edition of Mission Magazine shows a variety of ministries in which the General Board of Global Ministries is currently involved through its National Mission Institutions:

Atlantic Street Settlement, Seattle, Washington focusing on its summer educational program for low-income children with special learning problems.

Tacoma Community House, Tacoma, Washington features its unique language program developed for immigrants.

Crossroads, Salt Lake City, Utah goes beyond providing services to organizing communities for justice.

Houchen Community Center, El Paso, Texas provides day care for women who are unemployed and being trained in English and job skills.

La Mujer Obrera, a project supported by the Women's Division, which helps women who are unemployed because of the North American Trade Agreement.

A refugee from El Salvador becomes a United Methodist and returns to his home to start a new United Methodist Church there.

SUMMER 1996 - Schools of Christian Mission

1. Regional Study: China and Hong Kong. The unification of China and Hong Kong promises new opportunities for the rapidly growing Christian communities of each nation. Featuring: K.H. Ting and Ze-Min Chen of JinLing Theological Seminary; Wen-Zao Han, China Christian Council, and ManKing Tso, Hong Kong Christian Council.

2. Spiritual Growth Study: John Wesley. The message of the founder of Methodism resonates with United Methodists today. Featuring: Charles Yrigoyen and Ruth Dougherty, authors of a new book on Wesley.

3. General Issue Study: Living in a Multicultural Society. A congregation learns to adapt and flourish even as the neighborhood around it undergoes rapid change.

SPRING 1996

1. Statistics for Church Growth. A church in Wichita gets high-tech assistance from the Board in its quest for growth and revitalization. Featuring: Pastor Gayla Rapp of the University United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. Run time 3:53.

2. Feeding the Children. A United Methodist congregation in Hermosilla, Mexico aids families living on the brink of starvation. Run time 2:41.

3. Zimbabwe Program Bears Fruit. In Dendera, Zimbabwe, women -- many of them single mothers -- learn to grow and tend their own fruit trees for fresh food and income. Run time 1:51.

4. Seeds of Hope. South Carolina farmers share how a few seeds and a love of the earth has literally become a bountiful blessing for them and their community. Run time 3:15.

5. Across the Connection: New Mexico. United Methodists from Albuquerque visit unusual mission churches in rural northern New Mexico, and share their footage with us. Featuring: Pastor Ron Brewer, who has a five point charge.

6. Depot for Rapid Disaster Response Dedicated. A state-of-the-art depot in Baldwin, Louisiana ushers in a new era of assistance for victims of disaster. Featuring: Ken Lutgen, Associate General Secretary of the United Methodist Committee on Relief; Connie Takamine, Treasurer of the Women's Division of GBGM, Rex and Sheri Wyland, (Volunteer) Project Managers. WINTER 1996

1. Combatting Gang Violence. A United Methodist church in Elgin, Illinois turns teens on to spirituality and faith to stem a rising tide of gang-related violence. Run-time 6:08.

2. Bosnia Update. In Gornji Vakuf, Bosnia, the Board's United Methodist Committee on Relief constructs a community center in a village gutted by ethnic warfare. Featuring: Dirk Van Gorp, Project Manager for UMCOR in Bosnia. Run time 3:54.

3. Church Dedication in Zaire. In Uvira, Zaire, a new church is joyously dedicated in a region where United Methodist relief efforts have brought hope to tens of thousands of Rwandan refugees. 4. Haiti Update. As elections bring the promise of democracy to Haiti, United Methodist support of a children's hospital, immunization program, and school lunch program continues. Run time 1:02.

5. Children's Village Tent dedication. A congregation in Atlanta ships a tent bound for Children's Village, serving Rwandan refugees in Goma, Zaire. Run time 1:48.

1. United Methodism and the UN. As the UN celebrates its 50th birthday, the Church Center for the UN -- owned by the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries -- plays a vital supporting role in international diplomacy. 2. Ecclesiastes. This intriguing and mysterious book of the Bible is explored by two women through the process of writing each other letters. Run time 13:59.

3. Methodism in Europe. United Methodism, with 70,000 members in Europe, is being reborn in Russia, Lithuania and other formerly Communist nations; is aiding victims of war in Bosnia; and is working to bring together Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland. SPRING 1995

1. Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference 150th Anniversary. While celebrating this historic event, the 8000 member conference rededicates itself to its vital mission. 4. Korean-American Church Formed in Moscow. With over 500 members, the first Korean-American United Methodist Church opens to serve community members living in Moscow. Run time 2:12.
