Deep within the rural landscape of Zimbabwe, Nyadire United Methodist Hospital strives to deliver quality health care services despite severely limited resources. The staff attribute their strength and perseverence to their faith in God, which helps them provide patients with love, compassion, and wonderful care.
Gathering Strength for the Day
The true spirit of Nyadire United Methodist Hospital lies within the hospital staff, the patients, and the surrounding United Methodist, Christian community. Nurses such as Matron Joyce Tsiga have dedicated their entire lives to the hospital and helped ensure its continuity during times of civil war, political strife and years without a doctor on staff. The staff attributes their strength and perseverence to their faith in God, which helps them withstand their daily hardships while continuing to provide NUMH patients with love, compassion, and the highest quality of care.
Each morning at 7 AM, Joyce begins the hospital day by leading the staff of 90 in devotional prayer and song. In the native Shona language of the doctors and nurses she begins the familiar song, "Hakuna Wakeita sai Jesu. Hakuna Wakeita sa-yei," which means "There is no one like Jesus. There is no one like you."
Deputy Matron Letty Masosonore says that the spirituality of the Nyadire hospital community, supported by the morning devotional, guides the medical staff and brings them peace as they work day after day to meet the challenges of their patients and the hospital.
"I am inspired by Nyadire," Letty humbly asserts.
Nurses like Joyce and Letty have dedicated their entire lives to the hospital and have helped ensure its continuity during times of civil war, political strife and years without a doctor on staff. The staff has been spiritually, socially and physically molded by Nyadire United Methodist and are proud of the quality level of care their Christian Spirit leads them to provide their patients. In spite of the many challenges the hospital faces, from a lack of medical supplies and drugs to the epidemic level of HIV/AIDS in the community, the staff knows only that they must move forward in caring for and educating their brothers and sisters in need.
