Mission Agency Calls for Prayers that Peace Will Survive a Sudanese Leader’s Death
NEW YORK, NY, August 1, 2005—The international
mission agency of The United Methodist Church
today called for prayers that a peace agreement
in southern Sudan will hold in the wake of the
death of one of its principal architects.

Darfur Peace Step Evokes Cautious Optimism from Mission Leaders
Ground rules to resolve three years of conflict
in Darfur, Sudan’s troubled western region, have
drawn “cautious optimism” from United Methodist
mission executives. The rules were announced on

UMCOR Board Affirms Work in Sudan And Releases Funding Information
Funds from multiple sources are underwriting the
operations of United Methodist Committee on
Relief in the Darfur area of Sudan, the agency
announced today.
The UMCOR board of directors, meeting here,
approved projects in agriculture extension,
emergency supply distribution, and small-scale
livelihoods totaling just over $1 million. A
UMCOR field team is on the ground in the area
troubled for months by armed clashes.

he Methodist Church in Uruguay is sending teams
of volunteer doctors and technicians to Artigas.
Several thousand school kits are on their way to

United Methodist Relief Agency to Set up Operations Inside Sudan
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR),
currently serving Sudanese refugees in Chad, is
now poised to provide more direct services
inside
Sudan. UMCOR will extend its efforts with
displaced persons inside the violence-torn

section of Sudan by mid-December.

ecumenical partners. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, UMCOR
will buy basic items needed by a hospital there.

month have identified unmet needs in both island
nations. Recovery efforts continue in areas of

Darfur, putting thousands of people at risk of
losing access to aid. Victims of the recent
bombings of Iraqi churches will receive food
parcels, hygiene kits and other forms of
assistance. Talks are under way to set up a
regular flow of Medicine Boxes to Ganta Hospital.
Hurricane Alex skimmed the coast of North
Carolina last week, causing flooding in places
where recovery efforts for Hurricane Isabel
continue.

“Ethnic Cleansing” in Darfur: Background Information
Darfur is an area of subsistence farming and
pastoral nomads in northwest Sudan, adjoining the
nation of Chad. It is about the size of France.
The population is made up of Africans and Arabs,
almost all of whom are Muslims. Sudan itself is
Arab-controlled.
