It began with an undersea earthquake near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. As news began filtering out Dec. 26, 2004, of the impossibly huge wave that swept shore after shore in that section of the ocean, as video pictures emerged and surviving residents and tourists shakily told their stories, as international news crews rushed to document incredible scenes of devastation, many hearts were touched.

Although security concerns have increased since the November presidential election in Sri Lanka, the United Methodist Committee on Relief is continuing its tsunami work there. The agency also has addressed tsunami-related needs in India, Thailand and Somalia.

NEW YORK, October 11, 2005—United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Directors agreed yesterday to grant $505,893 to the Methodist Church of India in Chennai and Andaman Island to assist them in their community-wide tsunami recovery efforts. They are among the hardest-hit areas in India.

UMCOR Emergency Response Providing employment for the area's fisher folk who lost their livelihoods in the tsunami was just one of the many reasons UMCOR started the beach clearing project in Sri Lanka. UMCOR is helping to contain the Marburg virus with a grant to train 40 women and men on prevention in their communities. UMCOR is also helping The United Methodist Church in the Cameroon respond to the cholera pandemic there. Food shortages from both the lack of rain and breakdown of civil infrastructures are causing famines in southern and eastern African nations.

arrow icon. Tsunami Recovery in Indonesia Reveals Resilient Human Spirit 
The ornate handle shaped like an elephant's trunk stood out among the debris scattered around Banda Aceh. It looked like it broke off of a pottery vase or pitcher. In comparison to the other items in the rubble, a visitor could tell that this once belonged to something special. The handle caught the eye of an UMCOR official visiting Indonesia in April. She reflected how this piece of pottery echoes what the tsunami did in many areas: it took something beautiful and cherished, and left brokenness.

UMCOR Emergency Response Last summer three hurricanes ripped through the United States leaving a swath of destruction in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and as far north as western Pennsylvania. Twenty-five volunteers from Grace United Methodist Church in Fergus Falls, MN, packed school and health kits at UMCOR Sager Brown this spring. In the aftermath of the tsunami, UMCOR has opened recovery centers in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Talks are in progress for support of additional rehabilitation in India. UMCOR sent emergency aid to Somalia and Thailand as well.

Water levels along the Delaware River were the highest in decades as recent floods displaced more than 7,000 people. UMCOR's executive for US disaster response, Tom Hazelwood, will visit affected areas this week.

When Ekasi Siromani heard stories of the tsunami's terrible destruction in coastal areas near her south India village, she "felt deeply moved" to do something. This mother of three children-- herself one of India's "untouchables" - spent four days packing up rice, dhal (lentil-based food staple), oil and clothing provided by the British Methodist Relief and Development Fund. The fund is the British Methodist Church's equivalent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

As Indonesian officials once again increased the estimated death toll from the Dec. 26 tsunami, United Methodists continued their efforts to assist the survivors. By Jan. 25, the denomination had raised $6 million for relief work. The United Methodist Committee on Relief is encouraging church members to continue making cash donations and collecting health and school kits and medicine boxes for shipment to South Asia.

 Young people across the United States will continue a 12-year tradition of supporting local hunger ministries on Super Bowl Sunday by collecting $1 donations in large soup pots. This year, many youth groups participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring on Feb. 6 plan to help victims of the South Asia tsunami as well.

The passage of each day leaves the Rev. Wesley S.K. Daniel more concerned about missing family members in Sri Lanka, where the Dec. 26 tsunami killed thousands of people and wiped out churches that Daniel's father had started. "As the days keep going by, we are getting less hopeful that we will hear from our missing family members," said Daniel, Des Moines (Iowa) District superintendent for The United Methodist Church.

United Methodists in Africa are raising money and praying for their brothers and sisters in South Asia, who have suffered most of the deaths and destruction from the earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami also struck the northeast coast of Africa. According to reports, one person was killed in Seychelles, one in Kenya and 13 in Tanzania. Somalia, the hardest-hit country in Africa, lost nearly 300 lives. In a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean, about 150,000 people are believed dead and many are still missing.

Horrified by what they saw and heard of the destruction wrought by deadly tsunamis in South Asia, Methodists across Europe have lined up to help in whatever way they can. A congregation in the north of England is filling and shipping plastic crates called "aquaboxes" that contain water purification and filter equipment. An elderly Irish Methodist couple donated their government winter fuel subsidy to those they believe have more need of the money.

Residents of this camp (located inside territory controlled by the Tamil Tigers separatist group) have received assistance from a variety of organizations, including the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, a member of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International.
Thank you for your letter expressing concern for our people affected by the tsunami tidal waves on 26 Dec. We are all right here but the destruction to life and property these tidal waves have caused is unimaginable.

Amidst the smell of death and the architecture of rubble, I found two photographs, faded and waterlogged, in old frames, the glass moldy but unbroken, propped against a dense wad of rubble.

Should you listen to that strong impulse to send canned food, clothing, and other material goods to South Asia? UMCOR agrees with other humanitarian agencies that cash donations are the best way to show compassion in the wake of an international tragedy. Although many people share the impulse to give "things," giving money is often the most efficient and expedient means to help.

World Council of Churches leaders issued a pastoral letter Friday noting they were aware of the "dire need of immediate humanitarian aid as well as psychological and spiritual accompaniment" to more than five million people left homeless by an earthquake-triggered tsunami on 26 December that wreaked havoc across continents.

Relief efforts intensify as the death toll from tidal waves in the Indian Ocean region continue to rise. As of December 30, the number of dead in 11 nations was placed at 120,000, making the December 26 tragedy one of the worst natural disasters in human history.
