As we remember the events of September 11, 2001 we ask God to guide us toward a brighter future filled with love, peace, justice, and hope. The world changed as the result of the events of one day; however
God's love for us did not change. Christ's call for us to love God, our
neighbors, and ourselves did not change.

United Methodist Has Two Roles on 9/11: Pastor, Griever
Each year, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks, the Rev. Myrna Bethke has two
roles: pastor and grieving family member.
During the family service at the World Trade
Center site, she remembers her brother, William
Bethke, who perished in the towers that day.
Later, in her own community, she helps lead a
general memorial service.

United Methodists Watch Downtown Recovery after 9/11
The view from the window of Larry McGaughey's law
office changed after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks.
Gone are the looming towers, replaced by what
looks like a construction site. But McGaughey,
who fled his office before the collapse of the
World Trade Center that day, is back, along with
many others in the neighborhood.

Five Years Later, United Methodists Finish 9/11 Recovery Work
The Rev. James K. Law knows what it is like to
live in the shadow of the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks.
The pastor of the Chinese United Methodist Church
in Chinatown ministered to rescue workers at
Ground Zero, dealt with church members suffering
from trauma and temporary displacement from their
apartments, and watched the economy of Chinatown
fall apart.

Grant from UMCOR Helps 9/11 Victims in Virginia
Some of the hidden victims of September 11 live
in the Route One Corridor just south of
Washington. They are minimum-wage earners who
cleaned motel rooms, served food in the
restaurants, worked in shops catering to tourists
at Mount Vernon and other attractions, or drove
taxis to nearby Reagan National Airport. After
the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade
Center, tourist trade dropped dramatically,
taking jobs with it.

New Phase of Prayer Life Discovered
I have been a faithful United Methodist all my
life. Although no one can claim perfection in the
practice of one’s faith, I have tried very hard
my whole life to be faithful to Christ’s
teachings. So when the first plane crashed into
one of the World Trade Center towers on September
11, 2001, I began a new phase of my prayer life.
I cried out to God in much the same way as the
psalmist. And my cries grew more urgent as the
day progressed.

regarding the terrorist actions in New York. This
was part of their own healing. This was what my
son Noel drew... He is 15 years old and has a

Three Months after the Tragedy
No one could have been one hundred percent
prepared for ministering to the people around
the
World Trade Center on September 11 and the days
and weeks that followed.
But perhaps one United Methodist pastor, Dr.
James Law, was uniquely qualified. As a young
man
in Hong Kong, he was trained as an emergency
medical technician (EMT) and more recently was a
volunteer fire fighter. "When I came to
California," he said with a big smile, "my
mission turned from saving lives to saving
souls."
