| Methodists in Taiwan Make Large Gift to US Hurricane Relief | |||||||||||||
New York, NY, September 29, 2005—Methodists in Taiwan have sent $20,000 for hurricane relief along the Gulf Coast of the United States. This gift amounts to about $400 per person in the small Methodist community of 5,000, which is officially the Methodist Church in the Republic of China. In conveying the check to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Bishop Enoch C.H. Kuey said that he and his people were praying for "those whose lives have been forever altered by this tragic disaster" and for "those who are working desperately to restore order out of the chaos." "We are grateful to God for the generosity of our brothers and sisters of the Methodist Church in the Republic of China," said the Rev. R. Randy Day, chief executive of the General Board of Global Ministries, of which UMCOR is a part. "We appreciate the money but we also celebrate and honor their prayers." The Methodist Church in the Republic of China has roots on the Chinese mainland. Some of its members made their way to Taiwan when China was overtaken by the Communists. The church marked its 50th anniversary in 2003.
