| Methodists of Korea Send $55,000 for Hurricane Katrina Relief | |||||||||||||
NEW YORK, NY, September 16, 2005—The Korean Methodist Church has given $50,000 to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for use in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Methodist women in Korea sent $5,000 more to assist women and children affected by the storm. The $50,000 gift was presented by Bishop Kyung Ha Shin, president of the Korean Church’s Council of Bishops, at the opening of a two-day consultation between Korean church representatives and top officials of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries. “The United Methodist Church and the Korean Methodist Church are truly partners in mission,” said the Rev. R. Randy Day, chief executive of the United Methodist mission agency. UMCOR is part of the General Board of Global Ministries. The gift of the Korean women was presented to Dr. Janice Love, head of the Women’s Division of the mission board. Established 120 years ago through the work of missionaries, the Korean Methodist Church has been autonomous for many decades. It retains close ties with The United Methodist Church and is itself one of the most mission intensive parts of the world Methodist family. Periodic consultations between Korean Methodists and United Methodists consider mutual interests and mission challenges. This year’s agenda included missionaries, mission property, education, future cooperative efforts, the role of women in the church, and the unification of Korea. “God has given us one heart with the Korean Church in Christian proclamation
and service,” Rev. Day said in reflecting on the gift to UMCOR.
