Bishop To Speak on Crisis in Argentina

Bishop Nélida Ritchie, newly elected bishop of Argentina Evangelical Methodist Church, will speak about the crisis in Argentina and the church's response at a briefing on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 12:30 PM in room 1529 at 475 Riverside Drive, New York City.

The briefing, a brown bag luncheon, is presented by the Mission Contexts and Relationships/Mission Education program area of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries .

Argentina's economy has been battered by a long recession that has resulted in a double-digit jobless rate, spreading poverty, default on $141 billion in debt, and a banking freeze.

Ritchie, who has ministered to people in some of the country's most impoverished communities as a pastor and who also has served as a superintendent, in 2001 became the first woman ever elected to the episcopacy in Argentina. A graduate of the Superior Theological Institute of Studies in Argentina, she also has studied in Costa Rica and England.
