Dear Friends,

Please join me in praying for our brothers and sisters in Nigeria. In the days following the April 16 election, violence broke out across the country, particularly in the Kano/Bauchi District, leaving more than 800 people dead and 65,000 people displaced.

Tragically, among the dead are several United Methodists, including one pastor. Homes, shops, churches, and mosques were burned down during the three days of rioting. The United Methodist Church in Kano was completely destroyed. A number of people in the church community lost all of their belongings. Violence again broke out during the inauguration of the new president in May.

I have spoken to Bishop Arthur Kulah in Jalingo and expressed our solidarity and grief. He asked for our continued prayers and was confident that the Church will respond in this time of great need. UMCOR is working with the church in Nigeria to provide emergency food and medical care.

I pray that the horrific crimes will come to an end and the new government will help bring peace and stability to Nigeria. I am thankful that through our connection we can offer some relief during this crisis. Please keep the Nigerian people in your prayers.
