May 16, 2011--Change the world? "Our UMW connection changes the world every day," said Paula Coleman, United Methodist Women president at Mentor United Methodist Church in Mentor, Ohio.

Last weekend Mentor United Methodist Women inspired more than 200 people from all ages in the community and the church to this denomination-wide movement. "Even the downpours didn't dampen the spirits!" Ms. Coleman said.

Wearing bright green t-shirts provided by UMW, the volunteers--church members, friends, neighbors--set out on a rainy Saturday morning.

They planted spring flowers at one nursing home, shared worship at another, visited homebound neighbors, cleaned the main thoroughfare, signed up for an UMVIM trip, cooked for homeless folks, and even created community through dancing in a Zumba class.

"Then, as usual, we filled everyone's stomach and encouraged them through food," Ms. Coleman joked. Folks who stayed after Sunday service to celebrate the Change the World weekend shared a celebratory lunch. They heard from Change the World team leaders on why they support Imagine No Malaria, a global campaign to fight the spread of the preventable disease of malaria. They saw photos and video clips of each team at work and heard testimonials about how important it was for them to go out into the community to Change the World.

The Mentor United Methodist Women's luncheon was free for everyone, not just churchgoers or those who had participated on Saturday. "It was a fun, community-building end to the weekend," Ms. Coleman said.

"So, what did Mentor UMW do on this Change the World weekend? We were doing what we always do...supporting all manner of missions in a variety of ways. We want to be the hands and feet of Jesus," said Ms. Coleman.

Mentor United Methodist Church is a growing and thriving United Methodist Church, one of thousands that changed the world on the weekend of May 14-15, 2011.
