"Christmas is not your birthday, kids. It's Jesus' birthday! For Christmas, do you really think God wants you to have the Warhammer Xbox 360 game? Does God want you to accumulate more toys that just get dusty? Maybe God wants our family to help others this Christmas; to feed the hungry; to welcome the stranger; to volunteer at church; to love one another." That's what I said to my kids, though I'm not sure they actually heard me. This year, especially with the recession still on, I don't want my family to waste money on non-essentials. The very best presents really are the gifts that make the world a better place. Six years ago, my colleague Sandra Ruby gave a family a pig in my name for Christmas. I had heard of Heifer International and was thrilled that someone gave a gift of livestock to help a needy family. That got me thinking, "What do we do in honor of each other at work and at home? Can I give someone something really meaningful this Christmas?" We can give gifts through The Advance and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) in honor of our family, friends, and colleagues. Through these two alternative gift vehicles, we can give presents that make a difference. It demonstrates to our loved ones what Christmas is all about. The Advance: Alternative Gift Ideas The UMCOR Gift Catalog If anyone asks what you want this Christmas, tell them you want something from The Advance's Alternative Gifts and the UMCOR Gift Catalog.
