New York, NY, September 21, 2009--The United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries has opened a search for a new general secretary to lead the international mission agency that has personnel, projects, and partners in 136 countries. "The search committee is looking for candidates with strong commitment to the church and to mission, and with excellent leadership and management skills," according to a public announcement. The new general secretary, who is chief executive officer, will be responsible for leading a core staff of 288 and a missionary community of some 400. He or she must be able to "articulate the vision, values, and work of the board, and to follow through with a recent operational restructure." Bishop Bruce R. Ough of West Ohio, president of the board, and Dr. Maggie Jackson, a professor at Cleveland State University who heads the agency's personnel committee, are chairing the search committee. The new general secretary will succeed the Rev. Ed Paup, who resigned on September 1 for health reasons. Retired Bishop Joel N. The search committee is looking for candidates with strong commitment to the church and to mission, and with excellent leadership and management skills. Membership in The United Methodist Church is required. The general secretary must be able to lead a core staff of 288 and a missionary community of almost 400; to articulate the vision, values, and work of the board, and to follow through with a recent operational restructure. He or she is the chief mission spokesperson for the denomination and is expected to have strong collaborative skills in order to work closely with global and ecumenical mission partners. Leadership capacity must also extend to the four United Methodist churchwide focus areas:
Global Ministries has special responsibility for the latter. The agency currently has annual expenditures of $170 million, inclusive of all entities except the Women's Division.
