New York, NY, July 16, 2009--The vibrant and successful inter-Methodist mission in Cambodia is the focus of a consultation set for September 17-19 in Metairie, Louisiana.

The emerging Methodist Church in Cambodia is the result of the joint efforts of Methodists from multiple countries and cultures. It is among the United Methodist Mission Initiatives related to the General Board of Global Ministries, which currently has 11 missionaries in Cambodia.

From its inception in 1989, Methodism in Cambodia has increased from three to more than 180 congregations, today forming an autonomous denomination linked through partnerships to five sponsoring Methodist mission organizations.

Mission Collaboration

The five groups collaborating in Cambodia include:

  • The Korean Methodist Church (which has been there longest)
  • The United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries
  • The Methodist Church in Switzerland and France
  • The Methodist Church in Singapore
  • The World Federation of Chinese Methodist Churches.

The 2009 Cambodia Mission Consultation will bring together representatives from United Methodist annual conferences, districts, and congregations already engaged in the Cambodia Initiatives or about to get involved. They will learn about new developments in Cambodia, share experiences, and strengthen their commitments through worship and fellowship. A group of pastors, laity, and missionaries from Cambodia will take part.

St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Metairie, Louisiana, is host to the consultation sponsored by Global Ministries and the Louisiana Annual Conference. This conference has been a major participant in mission in Cambodia and other countries of Southeast Asia for almost a decade.

One highlight of the consultation will be the sharing of stories from United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) teams that have recently worked in Cambodia.

Methodist mission in Cambodia includes evangelism, church and leadership development, Christian education, and health ministries.
