As I reflect on the various women in my life who have greatly contributed their influence on me, I first think of my mother. I will always treasure her unconditional love, as well as her examples of a deep faith and hard work. I also think of my two daughters, who have given me many opportunities to follow my mother's example and share learning and experiences daily. A few words can't begin to express all of the profound influence that women involved in The United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women have provided me. A local woman started me on this journey through her encouragement and belief that I had some gifts and graces of service. From this one women to the many women who I have had the pleasure to meet, serve our God and others, and grow in my Christian faith, it has been an incredible journey.
While serving as an officer of Women's Division, I served with five other women who became very special to me and my journey. Each one is so unique and talented in her own way. Also, we were joined with many fantastic other women who joined us as directors and staff of Women's Division and/or General Board of Global Ministries. Each one gladly shared herself and her commitment, as we strived to follow God's will together. On my faith journey, I often think about the nurse from Afghanistan who worked tirelessly to provide a medical clinic where women could come and give birth in a country where clean water is so scarce. I readily remember the young woman in Juarez, Mexico, who worked so selflessly to help others who had lost almost everything they had in the recent floods. I think of the young mother who was answering God's call by going with her family to the intense jungle of South America to serve as an education missionary. I often thank God for the all of the tremendous women I met in Russia, who were organizing United Methodist Women in their conference, and the clergy women who were truly answering God's call in their lives. Perhaps you’ve noticed that I called no woman by her name. While these are some of the women who have strongly influenced my life's journey, I am certain that they represent other women throughout history who have made many similar contributions to the lives of many others. Most of all, God knows their name and what each one has accomplished. Diane Clark Vogler is a director of the General Board of Global Ministries.
