135th Birthday Ideas - Bright Light

by Mary Beth Coudal

135th Birthday Ideas

Like sparkling cider, ideas for United Methodist Women’s 135 years are popping up like bubbles. Here are a few sips of creative juice to show how some districts and conferences celebrate 135 years in mission!

$1.35 or More in 2004

Purple ribbons embossed with the UMW logo “135 years in Mission,” were sold to conference mission team members. Later in the year, these ribbons will be given to every UMW who contributes $1.35 or more in 2004, reports Doris Campbell, former Florida Conference Treasurer.

Lanyards

The Cal Pac Conference made lanyards to be used as eyeglass holders or key chains. By weaving the colors of undesignated giving (blue, green, orange, yellow and red) the vibrant lanyards catch one’s eye and spark conversation. To catch the light, the women used one frosted glass bead as a spacer bead. “The frosted bead means that it is not necessarily clearly visible to us where the money needs to go but we give ‘undesignated’ in faith that it will go where it needs to go,” says Lynne Sanderson, Educator and Interpreter from Cal Pac Conference.

A Quick Quiz and Birthday Candles

What does

5 quarters + 1 dime = ____?

13 dimes + 1 nickel =____?

$1.00 + 1 quarter + 1 dime =?

135 pennies ____ = ?

Treasurer Lucille Schaeffer from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference used the above quiz to get women thinking about 135 years in mission and configurations of spare change.

Lucille also decorated a cake with candles in the shape of the numbers “135”. The team sang Happy Birthday and asked the Conference President Ethel Malone to blow out the candles. “Then, if the members wanted a piece of cake, they were required to pay $1.35,” laughs Lucille.

At a later district meeting, Lucille decorated bottles of sparkling cider with ribbons and “135” candles. District officers wore pretty hats and tooted party horns. “If those present wanted a small glass of sparkling cider, they were required to pay $1.35,” says Lucille.
