William and Helen Lovelace are assigned by the General Board of Global Ministries to Ukraine where they have involvement with children's street ministry.

There are thousands of poor children on the street of Kiev. Some are without a home and there are others with an unbearable home life like Dima, who is a mixed-race child. Mixed race children have an extremely tough time, with racial feelings being are they are in Ukraine. Such children are often abandoned.

We had been feeding children one meal a day, two times a week. Without a building to house the program, we don't have much opportunity to do much other than give the kids a meal and do some trust building.

But now we have begun a new expansion on the Kiev Street Children Ministry. Thanks to special gifts from a group of Norwegian United Methodist churches and the Blackburg Virginia United Methodist Church, we are able to feed the children 5 days a week, once a day.

We hope to build on the "get-acquainted/ trust-building" we have done and move on to working with the children in a more directed way spiritually, emotionally and educationally. But without a building, we can't do much more than the meal we provide. The search has been on now for about four months for a permanent place to house the program.

The problem is not availability, but getting permission from the city and finding a place where the neighbors will tolerate "street children" coming and going. Pray that we can find space. We have hired a full-time director who will manage the day-to-day affairs of the program. Church volunteers and part-time help will staff the program to extend our services.

Anyone who would like to give to this special program can do so through: Street Children Ministry Kiev, Ukraine Advance Special #013054-8.
