I met Tereza in one of my visits to the detention center. She is married, the mother of two boys aged seven and five. Alily, the father of the two little boys, is applying for refugee status, thus the detention. The impact of the detention is a long struggle.

Fran Lynch is a deaconess and missionary assigned to the Willow Church and Community Ministry in Alaska.

The wilds of Alaska may charm the adventurous tourist, but this remarkably untamed sanctuary can also serve to further impoverish the vulnerable poor. In the small town of Willow, about 75 miles north of Anchorage, the Willow Church and Community Ministry is making strides to reach out to the "least of these" when all hope seems gone.

Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, July 15, 2010--Thousands of United Methodists paraded through the streets of Lubumbashi in the early morning of Sunday, July 11. They marched and danced and sang their way to Jerusalem United Methodist Church in celebration of the 100th anniversary of their church in the southern Congo.

Esther was one of several Haitian children who posed for Sandy Parsons.
My experience in Haiti was most incredible. Our unique collection of team members included two cancer survivors, a victim of corporate downsizing, a recent corporate drop out, three fairly 'normal' individuals and a wild and crazy young woman. None of us (except our team leader) had any construction experience. As it turns out, we had the perfect mix!

People were gathered in Kampala, Uganda, as they were all over the world, to watch and celebrate the final game of the World Cup, when three bombs created mayhem. The bombings in a suburb, a restaurant, and a rugby field killed at least 74 and injured at least 71. Included in the list of reported deaths was Pastor Peter Mutabazi of the Bwaise Pentecostal Church, a small United Methodist church that serves the poorest of the poor in Kampala.

Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON), a ministry of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief), reaches out to the "alien" among us--immigrants who have nowhere to go for help. Amy Spaur is a United Methodist missionary serving as a Church and Community Worker with JFON in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Eunice Arias and Luis Aramayo currently serve as missionaries in Venezuela.

For us to be in God's Mission is a way of "being" and not necessarily a way of "doing." We are sure that many Methodists around the world share this understanding. The General Board of Global Ministries, according to press reports, is signaling a cultural shift in how the denomination does mission.
