Local Haitian children and Mike Willis, former volunteer management coordinator for the Haiti Response Plan, share smiles together.

I have just returned from almost seven months in mission in Haiti. It is a time of joyous homecoming, of sad separations, of rest and recovery, of reflection and thanksgiving. I have seen God at work in unmistakable ways. I have been blessed to participate in the miraculous and healing work of Christ. It has been amazing.

Rev. William T. Carter

Little Rock, Arkansas, November 23, 2010--The Rev. William T. Carter, who led the designated mission-giving program of The United Methodist Church for 27 years, died in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 22. He was 68 years of age and had retired in 2006 after having headed the Advance for Christ and His Church since 1979.

Before 1960, when the Democratic Republic of the Congo was still under Belgian rule, an interwoven series of canals crisscrossed the countryside. The canals carried storm water away from the villages to the rivers, keeping standing water at a minimum. This gave mosquitoes little chance to breed in and around the villages where the Belgian administrators lived.

NEW YORK--The United Methodist Special Program on Substance Abuse and Related Violence (SPSARV) is inviting United Methodists to participate in an interactive live webcast Nov. 20, 2010, on the film Lost in Woonsocket to raise awareness about addictions and recovery and inspire congregations to compassionately respond to substance abuse in their church pews and community.

United Methodist Women of the Grace Haitian United Methodist Church in Miami hosted the Mission Travel Study for dinner and discussion.

November 12, 2010--After eight weeks of conducting personal research and corresponding by email and online chats, nine United Methodists met in Miami this week as part of the Mission Travel Study to Haiti. They have read and discussed a number of books and articles about the faith, culture, politics, history, and economics of Haiti.

The United Methodist response to the crisis in Haiti has been nothing short of remarkable. Immediately following the earthquake, United Methodists began offering their presence, prayers, and gifts in service with and to the people of Haiti. The Haiti Response Plan calendar is already full for the winter of 2010 and spring of 2011.

Oprah Winfrey will talk with male survivors of child sexual abuse on her television show on Fridays, November 5th and 12th. The topic came to the show's attention after the television producers viewed the film, "Boys and Men Healing," a documentary to which the General Board of Global Ministries contributed funding.

"Healthy I am only when my family is also well and healthy," said a teacher in Malawi. "I am healthy only when I am at peace with my fellow human beings and with creation," she continued. "I am healthy when my relationship with God is right. Being healthy means physical and spiritual well-being." I think this teacher is right, so I ask myself: "How healthy am I by her criteria?" How healthy are my colleagues? How healthy are our families...our congregations...The United Methodist Church...our world?

Global Ministries staff member reads her Bible and writes in her journal before her workday starts. All writers are encouraged to submit devotions for the new SPSARV Bible study.

The United Methodist Special Program on Substance Abuse and Related Violence (SPSARV) is creating a Lenten Bible study called Hope. "We need your contribution in providing a biblical basis for our denomination’s compassionate response to substance abuse and violence in our global community," said Rev. Cynthia W. Sloan, programs associate of SPSARV.

Hope! Joy! Peace! Advent is the season in the Christian year when we hear and participate in the time of waiting for the birth of the Messiah. We look with hope for the second coming of Christ. We pray for the light of Christ to fill "us with joy and peace in believing." We hear the voice of God in scripture. We hear the voices of God's people around the earth as we pray together for the joy and peace of Christ's love to warm the hearts and lives of all humankind.

courtyard and inside of the District Superintendent’s home in the Carrefour
District in September.

Declaring the six month Haiti Response Plan pilot project a success, the Board of Directors of UMCOR approved a grant of $3,094,500 to continue to field and host volunteer teams to address the humanitarian needs and priority projects of the Eglise Methodiste de Haiti (EMH). The project was approved and affirmed by the Board of Directors of the General Board of Global Ministries at the October 2010 board meeting in Stamford, CT.
