New York, NY, June 25, 2009--The 100th anniversary of Methodism in Russia was celebrated in St. Petersburg in an ecumenical service of worship in mid-June. The occasion also marked the 130th year since Methodism arrived in what was then Czarist Russia, in the region that is today the Baltic countries.

Solar ovens help alleviate deforestation; they also reduce air pollution thereby reducing the risk of some lung and eye diseases associated with tending cooking fires.

I remember the painstaking way in which sinew and fat were removed from the "goat parts" and laid out in the solar ovens on a barren field in preparation for cooking.

New York, NY, June 25, 2009--The Rev. Dr. John W. Johannaber, who once headed the mission personnel unit of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, died at his home in Oxford, Georgia, on June 9, 2009. He was 86 years old.

MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS)--When cholera struck Harare, Zimbabwe, during the past year, one of the worst-affected areas was the high-density suburb of Budiriro. Donwell Dube, 39, a graduate student at United Methodist-related Africa University, wanted to study how effective humanitarian aid was in the response to the cholera outbreak and chose Budiriro as a case study.

Colegio Rio Colorado, a mission-founded school near Bolivia, Yucumo, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The institution, which focuses on agricultural, technical, and general studies for middle and high school students, was started as a partnership between the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia and the General Board of Global Ministries. Four missionary families have served Rio Colorado. Below is an account of the anniversary from John and Suzanne Funk, the current missionaries. It is from "The Vine," the Funk family's newsletter.

Jacques Akasa Umembudi is a Global Ministries missionary assigned to the Wings of Caring Ministry, based in Kananga, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Information from both the family of missionary-pilot Jacques Umembudi and Bishop David K. Yemba of Central Congo confirms that there were no life-threatening injuries in the crash of a small mission plane at an airstrip near Lodja, Democratic Republic of Congo, on June 12.

Mustafa wandered through the mountains for a long time and finally had to flee his home country in order to preserve his life after he quit a militant group. A Kurd from Turkey, Mustafa ended up in Japan where he met Eva, a Filipina working in the entertainment industry.
