You never think the worst will happen to you, but sometimes it does, and you have to learn whether to give up or move on. I was daddy's girl. My dad passed away when I was ten because his body could no longer handle his addiction to alcohol. He suffered liver failure and a heart attack. This past February I lost my grandfather to the same disease.

The number of our neighbors along North Carolina's Outer Banks impacted by substance abuse is mind-boggling, and Jesus calls us to love our neighbors. Sometimes that love looks tough and sometimes it looks compassionate, but the love that we're trying to extend to our community, whether it's tough or compassionate, is always full of grace and hope.

Dr. Eduardo and Claudia Maia

When I was in medical school in Brazil in the year 2000, I had this dream--to be a medical doctor in Africa.

I had heard about Chicuque Rural Hospital in southeastern Mozambique, a Portuguese-speaking country just like my home country of Brazil, and a desire grew in me to go and serve there in medical ministry.

Rev. Tony Marciano, director of Charlotte Rescue Mission (CRM).
Most of you pastors probably don't have parishioners coming to your Sunday morning service staggering in the aisle and hollering during the time of prayer. Instead, you may have a woman who comes to that Sunday service without her husband, while he "sobers up from tying one on" the night before. There are children in tow who participate in your Sunday school/Christian education program. While you are grateful for their attendance, there is more to this scene than meets the eye.

The word recovery took on meaning when I travelled to Stockholm to meet the Baptist minister Harry Månsus at a recovery conference he arranged. I was met by a man who was not an alcoholic but a workaholic. He had "hit the wall" in his ministry as pastor and teacher at a theological seminary in Stockholm when he was asked to join the staff of a Minnesota Clinic in the late '80s.

Eluzinete Pereira Garcia is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church assigned to a public health ministry in Latin America and the Caribbean. Based in Brazil, she coordinates and promotes Comprehensive Community-Based Primary Health Care (C.C.B.P.H.C.), a primary healthcare program in partnership with CIEMAL, the Council of Evangelical Methodist Churches in Latin America and the Caribbean.

With tears in his eyes, Bishop Juan Cardona said to me, "Lu, I don't know what you did with the people of the town, but for three years we have been having recreational activities with the children, bringing psychologists, clowns, etc., and we were never able to make them smile. When I arrived, I saw the people's happiness and I couldn't understand what was happening when today all the people laughed!"

The kids have gone back to school, young adults are off to college, and church families have returned from vacations. Some conferences in the connection have new bishops; some churches have spent the summer getting to know new pastors—it is a good time to take stock of a congregation and its purpose. I learned something this summer about raising money for mission.

The General Board of Global Ministries is keenly aware that New World Outlook subscribers have a deep and abiding interest in God's mission and in their church's calling to participate in God's mission. God calls every congregation to reach out in ministries of evangelism, witness, relief, and nurture.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which suffered the highest concentration of Midwest flooding in early 2008, a sign declares the tenacity of flood survivors. UMCOR issued an emergency grant to the Iowa Annual (regional) Conference and contributed 5,000 flood buckets.
Churches of every size can and should have interest, involvement, and partnership in God's mission. All it takes to begin is one enthusiastic person in the position of mission chairperson. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step forward, and that is where you might, as a New World Outlook reader, be right now. Start with your own mission awareness and interest, and then move your congregation to step out into God's world.

Rev. Edward W. Paup, Global Ministries general secretary.
It is with humility and excitement that I assume the post of general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries, the mission agency of The United Methodist Church. Humility reminds us that we serve a God who freely loves us, a God who in Jesus Christ gives us grace upon grace for redemption, restoration, and reconciliation; humility, too, because the Global Ministries directors have entrusted me with the welfare of a powerful instrument of grace, an organization that embodies the past, present, and future mission commitment of our church.
