In Zambia, as in much of Africa, we are
constantly dealing with simply getting from point
A to point B. More than once, I have had our
project's Toyota Land Cruiser break through a
bridge deck and nearly roll over into a river.
Our project workers and I have spent hours
unloading cargo and hand carrying them up hills
too slippery and rough to ascend with a loaded
vehicle. Of course, most Africans don't even have
motor vehicles and consider themselves lucky to
have a bicycle.

Of the women in the Bible, Mary captures my
imagination. I find something very special about
her for having been the woman who brought Jesus
the Messiah, the Son of God, into the physical
world. I often wonder what it was like to be the
mother of Jesus. The mother of the most High God!

The phone call from the physical therapist came
hours before we were scheduled to open. She
wanted to refer a grandmother who was caring for
three special-needs grandsons under the age of
four. Before I could finish with the case worker,
my other line rang and it was the grandmother,
searching for shoes and blankets for "her boys."

On November 15, 2008, God sang in Costa Rica. God
sang because more than 40 women from 11 countries
in Latin America and the Caribbean were loudly
rejoicing for what they've learned, shared and
lived during a most amazing week together at the
Universidad Bíblica Latinoamericana (Latin
America Biblical University), an ecumenical
institution.

As I am writing this, I am watching a news
broadcast about the failing economy. Worries
about banks failing, war, and environmental
collapse seem to bubble up in many of my
conversations. With such chaos around me, I have
found it difficult to know how to hope, and in
what to place my hope. Yet in Advent we are once
again to hope and wait for the coming Messiah.

It's easy to be grateful for sugar and spice and
all things nice. Who among us doesn't feel
appreciative and appreciated when fortune is
smiling down upon us? This seems like a limited
sort of gratitude, too dependent on circumstance
and perception. How much more profound to come to
a sense of appreciation for all Life, even the
slugs and snails and puppy dog tails.

under Spanish moss-draped live oaks, they
primarily enjoyed multiple opportunities to
explore and learn about the natural wonders of
St. Simons, Jekyll and Sapelo, all barrier
islands along Georgia's southern coast. From
November 9 to 14, 2008, the group soaked up
information from local experts, who shared how
the islands are actively engaged in
preservation and environmental issues,
preserving and restoring natural treasures in
the coastal marshlands and beaches.

To see both near and far requires a combination
of lenses--ranging from microscope to stellar
observatory--with magnifying glasses, eyeglasses,
binoculars, and telescopes in between. Each one
offers a different perspective on reality; no one
lens can do the whole job.

The United Methodist Church is caught in a
massive identity crisis. If I may be permitted a
characterization that borders on caricature, it
has swung from being the confident leader of
mainline American Protestantism to becoming a
battleground ravaged by national and
international culture wars.

During the 2008 United Methodist General
Conference, clergy and lay leaders reminded
participants about the growth of The United
Methodist Church in Africa and the decline in
membership in the United States and Western
Europe. The 2008 North Texas Annual Conference,
which I attended as a clergy member, also
dedicated much time to discussions regarding
membership.

The ministry of the laity has always been at the
core of the Wesleyan movement. From its
beginnings in the late 18th century, as today,
the laity of the predecessors of The United
Methodist Church (UMC) have been active in
ministries with the poor, higher education,
church planting, health care, advocating for the
rights of women and children, organizing against
slavery, advocating for those in prison, and
seeking justice. Laypeople have taken the lead in
building hospitals, institutions of higher
learning, and community centers.

What I will be sharing with you is more of a
reflection than a theological discourse. I am not
a theologian, for somehow my religious training
has alienated me from the world of theology. My
theological "trauma" is still troubling me. The
orientation given to us is that to be theological
is to be academic, logical, and intellectual--a
domain traditionally presumed to be reserved for
men.

As the mission magazine of The United Methodist
Church, New World Outlook frequently
considers mission theology as it emerges,
changes, and reinvents itself in practice. This
issue presents viewpoints from missionaries,
professors, pastors, deaconesses, mission
executives, and laypeople--and they are all
different viewpoints.
