violence, Maria Sumire has worked with the
Quechua communities of Cuzco, advocating for
human rights. She has fought for and affirmed the
Quechua identity inside the church.

Recently, a year after her election as
congresswoman of the Republic of Perú, María
Cleofé Sumire de Conde, talked about politics and
faith to a group of Latin American women
scholars. Ms. Sumire is a Quechua indigenous
leader from Cuzco, in the Andean highlands, an
attorney, and Methodist Church member.

in Albania. The formal papers were signed on
August 20 in Tirana by Bishop Patrick Streiff,
leader of the denomination in Central and
Southern Europe.

Board of Global Ministries has taken no position
on financial divestment in Israel. The
international mission agency is not submitting a
resolution to The United Methodist Church's
highest legislative body supporting divestment in
companies doing business in Israel as a protest
to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

buses and traveled to communities in the
Nashville area to see what it means to be
homeless, an immigrant or without health care.
The community visits were part of the

The head of the major Christian ecumenical
organization in Africa has welcomed the
initiative of the United Nations in bringing a
multinational peacekeeping force to the troubled
Darfur region of Sudan.
The Rev. Dr. Mvume Dandala, general secretary of
the All Africa Conference of Churches, noted that
the U.N. plans to organize a 26,000-person force
composed of troops primarily from Africa. It
should be in place by December, 2007.

by the Taliban in the Qarabagh District in
Afghanistan. We are also remembering the family
