Sixteen missionary candidates responded to the
call by saying “Here I am, send me!”
What an historical event! The sixteen trained
from May 11 to 27, 2007 in Accra, Ghana to become
missionaries. Although The United Methodist
Church has sent missionaries all over the world,
these missionaries have always been trained in
the US. This is the first such training to be
held in Africa.

The theological seminary at Southern Methodist
University in Dallas is seeking a full-time
professor to teach global Christianity and mission
studies.Perkins is one of the 13 theological
schools related to The United Methodist Church. It
was opened in 1915 through the efforts of the
South Central Jurisdiction of the church and today
serves a global constituency.

UMCOR and Muslims AID Will Alleviate Suffering Together
Religious leaders, diplomats, British government
ministers and members of Parliament are praising
the new partnership between United Methodist and
Muslim relief agencies as "bold," "significant"
and one that "confounds stereotypes."
The New York-based United Methodist Committee on
Relief signed a partnership agreement with the
London-based global relief and development agency
Muslim Aid on June 26 at the House of Commons.

A partnership with a university in Costa Rica to
train Hispanic United Methodist pastors in the
United States addresses a critical new building
block in efforts to develop educated leaders for
The United Methodist Church.
Under an agreement between Latin American
Biblical University and the United Methodist
General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, a
pilot program will launch in August with an
initial enrollment of about 15 students. The
agreement was signed in May.

The chief mission executive of The United
Methodist Church has commended the major economic
powers for their large pledges to overcome AIDS
but wonders why they are so slow in making good
on their promises.
The Rev. R. Randy Day of the General
Board of Global Ministries responded to the
announcement that the G8 nations—the eight major
economic powers—will commit $60 billion to fight
preventable diseases over the next few years.

Two pioneer graduates in the master's program of
Health Sciences at Africa University are using
research and professional contributions to
promote public health in the communities they
serve.
Dr. Kasombo Tshiani, a physician, and Margaret
Tagwira, a laboratory technician, received Master
of Public Health degrees from Africa University
June 9 during the institution's 13th graduation
ceremony. Both are engaged in studies to improve
public health and public safety in Zimbabwe.

In an effort to get the U.S. government to ease
restrictions on religious travel to Cuba, a
delegation of leaders from Christian
denominations and ecumenical organizations
lobbied key lawmakers June 14 on Capitol Hill.
Jerald McKie, an executive with the United
Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, was
among leaders trying to garner support for
proposed House and Senate legislation that would
end a ban on travel to Cuba for U.S. citizens.

Harriett Jane Olson, an executive with the United
Methodist Publishing House, has been nominated as
chief executive of the Women's Division, United
Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.
If elected, Olson would join the division in the
fall, succeeding Jan Love, who left the post at
the end of 2006 to become dean of the Candler
School of Theology in Atlanta.

Mr. G. came to The Wesley Community Center of
Savannah seeking child care for his one year old
twins, Al and Jerry. His wife had abruptly
abandoned the family in October of 2005. He
quickly found himself on his own, and in desperate
need of help.

Communities of Shalom initiative of faith-based
development begun in 1992. The program now
operates in more than 200 sites in the USA and
two countries in Africa.

For David Paye Guinkpa, a new United Methodist
missionary, his commissioning at the Buduburam
refugee camp had special meaning. The camp had
been his childhood home after fleeing the
violence in Liberia.
On Sunday afternoon, May 26, 2007, Guinkpa was
one of 16 missionaries commissioned at The United
Methodist Church in the Buduburam refugee camp in
Ghana, West Africa. Methodist Bishop Robert
Aboagye-Mensah from Ghana presided alongside
United Methodist Bishop Joseph Humper of Sierra
Leone, a board member of the General Board of
Global Ministries.

United Methodists around the world are asked to
pray for God's guidance for the church in the
time leading up to and during the denomination's
2008 legislative assembly.
The Central Texas Annual (regional) Conference
host committee, which is preparing for the
assembly next spring in Fort Worth, has issued
