It is my third day at Fairfield Orphanage in
Zimbabwe, and today we attended the funeral of a
small baby, less than two months old, named
Canada. The coffin was small, too small for a
full life to have existed.

Over 2.5 million people die of AIDS every year,
and often, their deaths seem to go unnoticed
throughout the world. Yet the tsunami that is
AIDS continues to strike the shores of all
continents. So I was happy by what I experienced
on April 22nd, when I attended the HIV Positive
Teens Support Group Day sponsored by the Maua
Methodist Hospital here in Kenya.

In June 2005, Global Ministry’s United Methodist
Development Fund (UMDF) provided financing so the
congregation of the First Samoan United Methodist
Church (UMC) in Anchorage, Alaska could purchase
their first church building.
Asian/Pacific Islanders are the second largest
and fastest growing racial group in Anchorage. In
2003, Samoans held the distinction of being the
fastest growing group in the area. Therefore,
this facility was vital in providing the Samoans
with a place to gather, and worship.

to wait in Jerusalem for God’s promise and
said; “When the Holy Spirit empowers you, you
will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts

Pentecost.

In rural Panama, hundreds of men, women and
children have come to see a doctor. It is an
opportunity that only comes around at certain
times of the year when medical mission teams
visit Chiriqui.
This is a remote mountain area, 10 hours from the
nearest hospital. Many of the patients belong to
the indigenous Ngöbe population.

What does it mean to be a Christian minority in
the context of a post 9/11 Islamic society?
Christians in Pakistan ‘live and move and have
their being’ in a context of increasing
uncertainty. Sometimes that environment turns
hostile. Yet there is no stopping their faithful
witness and service.

A desire to shift more decision-making about
mission in Latin America to Methodist churches in
the region has led to the successful development
of a permanent fund to support projects in those
countries.
The Encounter with Christ in Latin America and
the Caribbean Permanent Fund, administered by the
United Methodist General Board of Global
Ministries, uses the interest from nearly $1.5
million in principal to finance the projects.

How vividly I recall "Old Home Day" at the church
of my grandmother's childhood! We had to drive
about 30 miles to get there--not a short jaunt in
those days of dirt roads--so we were up early in
the morning to pack a picnic lunch and dress in
our Sunday best.

When I decided to retire from the World Bank in
Washington D.C. to move to Bellingham, WA, a
friend of mine asked, “Do you know anyone
there? Are you sure you want to move there? Do
you know that some people in that area are
hostile against Japanese because they were afraid
of Japanese invasion during the WW II?”

As I neared the house, I could see lots of people
gathering around, trying to get in or at least
get close enough to be part of this house
blessing in the village of Bombita in the
Dominican Republic.
In the small dwelling, I sat and watched people
sing praises to God at the top of their lungs,
sweating up a storm due to the intense heat and
number of people crammed in the house. I was
moved by the depth of their faith.

Christian faith must bear fruit that heals hearts
and spirits, re-builds trust and relationships,
and restores dignity. During my recent assignment
in Cambodia, a country badly damaged by the
legacy of the Pol Pot Regime (1975-1979), I had
the opportunity to facilitate a visioning
workshop for the Methodist Mission in Cambodia
(MMC).

It is only fitting that on Mother's Day, we honor
and remember Susanna Wesley, the mother of John
and Charles Wesley, founders of Methodism.
Susanna Annesley Wesley was the youngest of
twenty-five children born to the family of Dr.
Samuel Annesley, a well known minister of the
time. Susanna Wesley and her husband Samuel, also
a minister, had nineteen children in the first
nineteen years of marriage. Ten of which lived
past infancy.

mission service," said the Rev. Clinton Rabb,
assistant general secretary for mission
volunteers of the General Board of Global
Ministries. "The growth and the appeal come from
the grassroots nature of the volunteer movement."

the Council of Bishops that the church "must be
led more by a clear vision and mission than by
rules and regulations" in order to make disciples
for the transformation of the world. Huie said
John and Charles Wesley's Methodist movement
began by ministering to people with no economic,
religious or political power and helping them
become what God intended, adding "They made
Christian faith simple and practical."
