Traditional or contemporary, old or new, formal
or informal, stuck in the past or moving ahead
to
the future—I don't consider these opposites a
matter of choice. Rather, they coexist in
perpetual tension. I think most thriving
congregations have a little of both.

The US church is living through a cataclysmic
moment—not unlike the 1780s and 1790s, out of
which the Methodist Episcopal Church emerged. Old
alliances and associations are shifting, and new
networks are emerging. Bishop Larry Goodpaster
and I recently sat in a room full of
denominational leaders from Christian groups all
over America. We were the only two United
Methodists in the room.

It is an amazing vision—to have a heart and a
desire to plant a new church with the sole
purpose of winning uncommitted people to Jesus
Christ. Such was the vision of the former
Jacksonville District of the Florida Conference.
The growth of southwest Duval County was creating
a certain degree of anxiety among district
leaders.

“How can the Friday before Easter be called
good?” questioned Dr. Mwiti during his sermon
Easter morning. “It is because of the outcome.
When we face Good Fridays in our lives, we must
not focus on the present circumstances but on
what is to come. The stone that was rolled away
that joyous Easter morning is like the huge
problems we face. We can’t imagine how they could
ever be removed from our paths, but with God, all
is possible.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters:
Do you ever stop to wonder why our Christian
celebration of the Resurrection of Christ is
accompanied each spring by colored eggs, bunny
rabbits, baby chicks, and pounds of chocolate? I
will admit that I do, and I don’t always feel
charitable about these cultural trappings. An
easy reaction is to blame commercial interests,
but Wal-mart, Macy’s and Hallmark aren’t really
responsible.

Good Friday commemorates history’s most famous
public execution. It is a day of deception,
death, and destruction. On this day we take
solace from the words of Psalm 22 as some believe
Jesus did while dying on the cross. In spite of
our repulsion at this cruel method of torture and
death, we cling to the cross.
My clinging to the cross was recently called into
question.

United Methodists are committed to urban ministry
but want more training on how to provide that
ministry.
They also want more networking opportunities so
that those ministering to urban neighborhoods can
learn from and support one another.
Such were key findings of a denominational survey
conducted during the winter, with 808 local
churches and 20 United Methodist bishops
responding.

closest disciples understand what was about to
occur as they journeyed together to Jerusalem.
Again he rebuked the Pharisees, who continued to
think that “keeping the law” was so important.
