by calling on the U.S. Congress to double funding
to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS overseas.

United Methodist ministry to orphans of AIDS in
Namibia, Africa.

We welcome indications from the United
Nations that the number of HIV/AIDS cases
worldwide in late 2007 may not be as high as
estimates placed it a year ago, but there is less
good news in the report than some headlines
suggest. While the cawse total is now set at 33.2
rather than 39.5 million, other statistics show
that the number of persons living with AIDS
continues to rise, with 6,800 new infections per
day.

The Rev. Adam Hamilton sees the New Testament
Book of the Acts of the Apostles unfolding in
Eurasia today as The United Methodist Church
plants congregations in an expanse covering 11
times zones. The Rev. Hamilton and the Church of
the Resurrection, which he pastors, are deeply
involved in the Russia Initiative of the General
Board of Global Ministries, the international
mission agency of the denomination. Rev. Hamilton
was host pastor for the 13th Consultation of the
Russia Initiative, held at his church on Nov. 15-
17.

Iowa Bishop Gregory Vaughn Palmer was elected
Nov. 8 to lead the worldwide Council of Bishops
of The United Methodist Church. He will begin his
two-year term as the council's president in May
2008.
Palmer will succeed Bishop Janice Riggle Huie of
Houston, whose term expires during the 2008
General Conference meeting next spring in Fort
Worth, Texas.

Declaring war "incompatible with the teachings
and example of Christ," the bishops of The United
Methodist Church called on leaders of all nations
to begin an immediate withdrawal of troops from
Iraq.
The bishops also urged against deploying
additional troops to Iraq and against
establishing permanent military bases in the
Middle Eastern country.

Health-care teams volunteering under the banner
of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM)
continue to grow and adapt creatively to the
unique health needs they find in Africa, Asia,
the Caribbean, and the Americas.
In 2006, a total of 2,907 volunteers served on
264 teams with a health-promoting purpose,
according to UMVIM jurisdictional reports.

United Methodist pastors and surviving spouses in
Mozambique will receive additional pension
benefits beginning in 2009 following a decision
by an interagency pensions committee.
As a part of an initiative to provide pensions
for United Methodist clergy serving churches
outside the United States, representatives from
five United Methodist agencies agreed Nov. 3 to
make the two annual (regional) conferences in
Mozambique the denomination's second pilot
pension project.

second-mile giving program that was set up in
1948 and is still going strong almost 60 years
later. How strong? The latest estimate for total
Advance giving since 1948 is $1,201,211,569.
That's 1.2 billion dollars. As impressive as that
is, that's not what the celebration is about.

visitors as they enter the preschool building at
the McCurdy School in Española, New Mexico. The
work of The Advance, the designated giving arm of
The United Methodist Church, becomes as real as
the smiles on the faces of the children sitting
in a circle on the floor. Providing excellent
education, mentoring, and counseling for students
from preschool through twelfth grade, McCurdy
School is just one of numerous Advance projects
that make a lasting impact on people's lives in
the name of Jesus Christ.

The Red Bird Valley, nestled in the Appalachian
mountains of southeastern Kentucky, is an
isolated area where three counties come together.
The area is underdeveloped, cut off from the
educational and medical services of the county
seats, with very few employment opportunities for
the people of Appalachia. In a region with very
little, The United Methodist Church is a presence
that has provided hope to a part of the country
that many have forgotten.

More than 400 supporters of a United Methodist
mission outreach to West Africa packed a suburban
Indianapolis banquet hall Oct. 28 to celebrate 20
years of educational and medical ministries in
two countries torn by civil war.
Operation Classroom was designed originally as a
partnership linking the United Methodist General
Board of Global Ministries and the church's
Liberia and Sierra Leone annual (regional)
conferences with the two Indiana annual
conferences to upgrade secondary education in the
West African countries.
