Bishop Felton E. May at the Global Ministries 2007 Fall Board Meeting.
We welcome indications from the United Nations that the number of HIV/AIDS cases worldwide in late 2007 may not be as high as estimates placed it a year ago, but there is less good news in the report than some headlines suggest. While the cawse total is now set at 33.2 rather than 39.5 million, other statistics show that the number of persons living with AIDS continues to rise, with 6,800 new infections per day.

United Methodist Bishop Charlene P. Kammerer preaches at the 2004 General Conference in Pittsburgh. The church's legislative process is explored in a free online course being offered through United Methodist Communications in advance of the 2008 gathering in Fort Worth, Texas.
How are delegates elected to the United Methodist General Conference? How many votes are required for the assembly to approve a petition? What is the role of bishops in the once-every-four-years gathering? And why is it important to keep a copy of the Daily Christian Advocate handy throughout the proceedings?

United Methodist congregations in Russia today are somewhat like the churches to which the Apostle Paul wrote his letters: young and striving toward maturity. This comparison, made by Bishop Hans Växby of Moscow, struck a positive cord at the 13th Consultation of the United Methodist Russia Initiative, a mission program that also embraces Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova.

The Methodist table in Milan, Italy.

Banana tree in the Philippines. In the small village of Acacia on the southern island of Mindanao, families rely on farming and 23 of them have discovered way to maximize the fruits of their labor. They have learned how to process bananas, turning them into packs of delicious banana chips. The additional revenue benefits both the families and their church.
Banana chips, guava jelly, mushrooms, and bags made of woven palm leaves do not usually conjure images of family or community empowered, or of Christian ministry. They do in areas of the Philippines where a church-sponsored livelihood program is bringing spiritual and economic renewal.

This issue of New World Outlook is a celebration of The Advance for Christ and His Church, a second-mile giving program that was set up in 1948 and is still going strong almost 60 years later. How strong? The latest estimate for total Advance giving since 1948 is $1,201,211,569. That's 1.2 billion dollars. As impressive as that is, that's not what the celebration is about.

The Red Bird Mission Community Store provides employment to the local residents.

In a region with very little, The United Methodist Church is a presence that has provided hope to a part of the country that many have forgotten.
