This Sunday, October 1, 2006, United Methodists
will come together once again to celebrate World
Communion Sunday, a time of communion with
Christians all over the world, and a joining
together in an effort to serve God in life-
changing ministries. The offerings from this
Special Sunday will help to support the education
and training of church and community leadership –
individual students from around the world whose
future work will have a lasting impact on the

In “The Servant Song,” Richard Gillard writes:
“Brother, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to
you;
pray that I may have the grace to let you be my
servant,
too.” There is no doubt in my mind that being in
mission is not about a special place of assignment
but,
rather, about an awareness of the opportunities to
witness to God’s love through our lives—wherever we
are—and to receive in those situations.

This issue of New World Outlook
considers why we engage in mission as a church,
as individuals, and as the official mission
agency of The United Methodist Church. Theology,
the study of God and how God relates to the
world, is a subject for all members of the
church, clergy and laity. When considering
mission theology, we turn our attention to how
God relates to the world through us as we reach
out to others in mission ministry.

I have a dear friend who became pastor of a
small
church that had seen better days. Try as he
might, he could not get the older members of the
congregation sitting in the back pews to move to
the front, where the worship experience would
improve by having a mass of people together. One
day, he finally asked an old man why he
continued
to sit by himself in the back. The old man
replied, “I’ve sat in this pew for the last 40
years. It is not my fault that the people who
used to sit all around me have died or moved
away.”

Reexamining the theology that undergirds the
General Board of Global Ministries, I’ll begin
by
addressing the issues of “local” and “global.” A
century ago, local generally
meant “here” and global, “far away”;
local meant “mono-everything” and
global, “multi-everything”; local
meant “uniformity” and global, “diversity.”

Teaching systematic theology and Christian ethics
for 15 years at an ecumenical college in northern
Nigeria, I was able to concentrate research on
Christian ethics and to complete a book on that
subject. I considered that a way to answer God's
call. During our 10 years at St. Paul's United
Theological College in Limuru, Kenya, in addition
to teaching, I felt led by the Spirit to focus on
writing about systematic theology.
