Bishop Hans Vaxby of Moscow accepts a stole and cap after being made a member of the Rural Chaplains Association at the 12th consultation of the United Methodist Russia Initiative.  The Rural Chaplains help to organize rural congregations in the US to provide assistance to rural churches in Russia and other countries in the Eurasia Area of the denomination.
The future of The United Methodist Church and its leadership in any land or culture depends upon “a passion for mission,” according Bishop Hans Vaxby of Moscow. “And you cannot fake passion,” he said in an interview at the 12th consultation of the denomination’s Russia Initiative, sponsored by the denomination’s General Board of Global Ministries on February 23-25.

The Russia United Methodist Theological Seminary describes itself as “preparing servant leaders for the largest parish in the world,” and that is a big job for a small institution. The Moscow-based seminary trains clergy for the denomination’s Eurasia Area, which incorporates 11 time zones from the Pacific Ocean on the east to the heart of Central Europe on the west. Because of the expanse, the area has five annual conferences.

When Esther was 12, she ran away to Porto Alegre, Brazil, to work as a housekeeper.

I was born in Petit-Goave, Haiti, and I grew up in the Methodist Church in Haiti. From an early age, I was taught to believe in God and to be thankful for God’s blessings. I value that heritage today as I try to address problems that confront Haitian-Americans in my adopted country. I’m concerned about civic education and about integrating Haitian-Americans into the community. Women’s issues and after-school programs for children and youth also capture my attention.

While much official business is being conducted at the World Council of Churches' 9th Assembly, organizers have also added events to encourage more informal participation by other Christians.
A Brazilian word with indigenous roots, "mutirão," was chosen to describe this opportunity to gather and share together at the assembly through workshops, cultural offerings and exhibits. On Monday February 6, 2006 President George Bush presented his $2.77 trillion fiscal year (FY) 2007 budget to Congress.  This proposal came only days after Congress passed a budget reconciliation bill for FY 2006, in which $40 billion will be cut from entitlement programs, programs that are governed by legislation in a way that legally obligates the federal government to make specific payments to qualified recipients, over five years which include programs such as Medicaid, welfare, child support and student lending.

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil - Churches have new opportunities to influence global policies and "bring a moral voice to the world," but that cannot happen unless they relate to each other more closely, according to the leader of the World Council of Churches. "We can no longer separate ethics and ecclesiology, the search for unity of the church and the unity of humankind," said the Rev. Samuel Kobia, a Methodist pastor from Kenya and the WCC's chief executive. "They are closely intertwined with each other."

Mudslide in the Philippines This morning in the Philippines a mudslide triggered by days of drenching rains buried an entire village and an elementary school. The village of Guinsaugon in southern Leyte Island is located about 420 miles southeast of Manila. Thus far 83 people have been found alive and 19 are confirmed dead according to a BBC account this afternoon. Rescue officials estimate that between 1,500 and 2,500 people may be buried in the mudslide.

On February 16, 2005, hundreds of women and men in 76 countries collected data to monitor the roles and images of women as portrayed in the news media. The purpose has been to document the participation and portrayal of women in the world's news media; then, using hard data and facts, create advocacy tools to educate and make changes.

In 2004 the Pharr Community Outreach Project/Shalom, Pharr, Texas received a $9,000 grant from the General Board of Global Ministries, and used it as leverage for additional funds to hire a full-time project director. In 2006 with a full-time director in place, three additional staff and many volunteers, the Community of Shalom is positioned to expand its programs and move closer to wholeness and well-being for everyone in the community.

Members of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church in east Tennessee prepare Valentine treats to raise funds for mission projects.
They're teachers, businesswomen, housewives and retirees. They're United Methodists. And they're meticulous. Each winter, in the weeks before Valentine's Day, these United Methodist Women rush out of their homes, offices and classrooms, and converge in the kitchen at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church in rural Washington County, Tenn., where they lace on aprons and make turtles.

Working Together as Partners Lessons from Long Term Recovery

Long term hurricane response requires the whole community, reminiscent of Paul’s words in 1 Cor. 3:9, “We work together as partners who belong to God.” It is this kind of partnership during their long term recovery that equipped and enabled the Peninsula-Delaware Annual Conference to rebuild after Hurricane Isabel devastated their region in 2003.

Students and teachers from Soltun Folkehogskole in Norway visit the U.N. headquarters in New York
A group of Norwegian youth are exploring how they can help eliminate hunger and poverty through meetings at the United Nations and a journey to Mexico, Brazil, South Africa and India. The 11 young people are students at the Soltun Folkehogskole, a folk high school in northern Norway owned by the United Methodist Norway Annual (regional) Conference. They are enrolled in Soltun's "Backpack Surprise" course, which concludes April 6.

The late Dr. Han Wenzao, former president of the China Christian Council and general secretary of the Amity Foundation.
New York, NY, February 7, 2006--Dr. Han Wenzao, well-respected Chinese Christian leader and ecumenist, died on February 3, 2006 at the age of 83. He was a former president of the China Christian Council and general secretary of the Amity Foundation, a post he held for 19 years until his retirement in 2003.

Sung-Ok Lee is Executive Secretary for Community Action for the Women’s Division of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.
Being in mission as a member of United Methodist Women is like being a plumber. A plumber connects pipes, replaces old pipes, fixes leaks and unclogs drains. When plumbers succeed, we enjoy clean water from free flowing faucets.

As I reflect on my role as a member of United Methodist Women, I am reminded of Jesus’ vocation as a carpenter, a builder. He also built a movement for justice and peace that helped the people of his time expand concepts of mission. He succeeded by staying connected to people.

He was one of the brightest students I ever had taught, but I sensed at the beginning of the semester that his view of God was exclusive, judgmental, narrow, angry and rigid. I did not know from where it came. But I thought it would be too bad if he did not grow out of it, as he definitely was an image of the God in whom he believed.

A young student in Nicaragua
In 2005 Nicaragua celebrated the 25th anniversary of an historical event that caught the eye of the world and earned a United Nations award. From March to August of 1980, approximately 60,000 young people mobilized to the far reaches of Nicaragua to share their basic skills in reading and writing with campesino (poor farmer) families. The illiteracy rate dropped from 60% to 12% in just six months

The Online Community will enhance the ways in which women will connect to each other and the ways they talk and think about local and global issues.  It will provide women a space in which they can be themselves, have voice, and participate or simply observe.
The October 2005 Board of Directors meeting authorized the Women's Division to launch the first, official UMW Online Community.  The primary purpose is to enhance the ways our members communicate with each other.

The warehouse for the United Methodist Committee on Relief needs donations to help re-stock its supplies.

The top two needs are not the standard kits, but specific cleaning and bedding items needed to fulfill requests after 2005's many disasters, according to Ted Warnock, interim director of the Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, La.
