This evening is watch night. In my youth, we
gathered on New Year’s Eve for the ritual of
reflecting on the end of the year. Sometimes we
laughed at our foolishness for not fulfilling our
resolutions. Then we wrote new resolutions--hoping
that this time we would fulfill them. We were
given an opportunity for a fresh start.

The body of Christ may seem small in Japan—1.13
million or just 1 percent of the total population
of more than 127 million people, but Christian
ministry is widespread and diverse. Christians are
especially influential in education, welfare,
human rights and peace advocacy.

Today, at St. Andrew’s Mission in McComb,
Mississippi, a caseworker referred me to a
physically handicapped Hurricane Katrina
survivor. The caseworker said that this elderly
woman would need assistance with her medication.
I called the woman and she was extremely upset.
She explained to me that I could not help her
because others had tried and were unable to help.

You can look at Christmas prayers, songs, and
meaning differently according to your life
experiences. You can sing Christmas praises to
the Lord for His great mercies in a routine way
or with spirit. You can make Christmas morning a
time of faith or a time of haste.

had been separated from her children for many
years because of civil unrest in the Congo. Our
church and the Frankford Group had worked with
her in securing papers and financial resources to
bring her children to the US to be with her.

All faithful Christians are like the shepherds
from the Bethlehem hills. We are called from our
everyday activities to see what God is planning—a
world of love and peace and hope and joy. God’s
plan comes to focus in Jesus, one humbly born,
laid in a manger, who through Easter becomes both
message and messenger of God’s eternal intentions.

Recently I visited a patient dying of cancer in
the hospital. She was a beautiful European forty-
two-year-old woman and the mother of a nine-year-
old. I spent quite some time with the woman and
her husband, listening to and sharing their
fears, anger, rage, and bitterness. Then, through
the courage inspired by the Holy Spirit, we
shared God’s mercy and grace.

One winter night I opened my home to a woman I’ll
call “Natalie” and her 2-year-old daughter.
Fleeing an abusive situation, Natalie had suffered
some superficial cuts, but her psychological
wounds ran much deeper. I prepared a meal for my
guests and listened to the woman all night.

As I work on this devotion it is the middle of
October. Already the stores are working on
stocking their shelves with Christmas
decorations. It starts a little earlier each
year
it seems. Jesus says “There will be signs in the
sun, the moon and the stars…when you see these
things taking place, you know that the kingdom
of
God is near” (Luke 21 selected verses).
