"Will you give me a referral to get some food at
one of the food pantries?" The request came
from "Jean," whose Social Security check is not
enough to cover all of life’s necessities. But it
is duplicated again and again among the 150
people who depend on a United Methodist feeding
program in a New York City neighborhood where the
homeless are grim reminders of the illusions of
affluence.

I haven’t always been a United Methodist. When I was
18, I attended a Methodist church in Mexico and
decided to accept God’s grace. I felt secure knowing
God was in my life. My response to God’s call to
ordination was a gradual process that began with an
indigenous child with whom I tried to minister.

his colleagues when he said, "I think all the
African bishops are more than happy to have it
here."

The ecumenical movement is marked by significant
events throughout the late 19th and 20th
centuries, when formal councils were formed and
agreements signed. Yet the movement for
Christians to unite, recognize one another’s
faith in God and Christ the Savior, and work
together as part of God’s universal call to
mission has been brewing since Christ prayed on
the Mount of Olives.

The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches
that met in Porto Alegre, Brazil, February 14-23,
2006, hardly seemed like the place to engage in
discussions about building houses. Through the
cooperative effort of Habitat for Humanity in
Brazil, the National Council of Churches of the
USA; the Methodist, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic
churches of Porto Alegre; and other ecumenical
and nongovernmental partners, the dream of 100
new homes for the very poorest in Porto Alegre is
about to come true.

“The Global Justice Volunteers format is designed
to be a life-transforming process, not just a
program with an ending point,” the Global Justice
Volunteers material reads. “The young adult
volunteer should carry the Global Justice
Volunteer experiences into his or her current and
future work.” For many young people who serve as
GJVs globally, the expectation to carry the
experience with them is not a choice. It is a
must.

The Ecumenical Movement is sometimes a
complicated topic in official church circles.
Church structures, ordained and maintained by
very human decisions, often are not flexible
enough to allow reach beyond what can be
controlled by the structure. Official documents
must be worked on for years in order for two or
more denominations to agree about how they will
consider the traditions, sacraments, and beliefs
of other denominations.

After a 20-year hiatus, the North American office
of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF)
has reopened its doors. The WSCF, a global
student ecumenical organization founded in 1895
by US Methodist and Nobel Peace Prize winner John
R. Mott, has long been an important organization
in the ecumenical movement. However, its work in
North America—and the United States in particular—
has been hampered by the lack of a regional
office. WSCF supporters hope that the new office,
located in Toronto, will generate excitement and
new opportunities.

When you are a missionary, every day is different
from the day before. Whether God calls you to work
with prisoners, reach out to persons affected by
HIV/AIDS, teach preschoolers or serve a
congregation as pastor, you’ll soon discover:
Mission is relational. It’s about people, both
young and old, and it’s about trying to pour your
heart and soul into ministry.

I applied to be a US-2 because I wanted to
participate in ministries that would further God’s
reign of love, peace, mercy and justice. In my
first placement, I rocked babies and read with
children. That was not unusual: Most US-2s work in
after-school programs, homeless shelters, food
banks and other such agencies. I was surprised
when I was told my new assignment would be as a
campus ministry staff member at Southwestern
College, a small United Methodist school in
Winfield, Kan.
