NEW YORK, NY, Oct. 27--A General Board of Global Ministries partner organization in the People’s Republic of China, the Amity Foundation, has received the prestigious China Poverty Eradication Award, following its nomination in the ‘organization’ category. The award was given by the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) in recognition of outstanding contributions and achievements which have led to substantially alleviating poverty in some of the poorest areas of China.

During the opening communion service, Rev. David Wilson reflected on Isaiah Chapter 40, a biblical passage full of the beauty of nature that “reminds us of whose we are.” Rev. Wilson, along with Josephine Deere, organized and led the morning devotions at the annual board meeting in Stamford, Connecticut, from October 9 through 12, 2006. Both Wilson and Deere are from the Oklahoma Missionary Conference, which represents about 90 churches in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas.

The equality of men and women is vital to having a just and developed society, according to Zimbabwe's deputy minister of Women's Affairs, Gender and Community Development. Abigail Damasane urged more participation of women in decision-making in her opening address during the Oct. 9-13 commemoration of the life and work of Dag Hammarskjöld. The event, co- hosted by the Swedish Embassy and United Methodist-related Africa University, was attended by students, diplomats and the university community.

Shilaisan was an orphan who at age 23 married a man who was drafted into the Japanese army during their first year of marriage. He was killed in the Battle of Guadalcanal when their daughter was only 3 years old. As a young widow, Shilaisan provided for her daughter and adoptive family by making kimonos that were sold for profit. This improved her life financially, but a burden weighed on her heart.

A clergy couple from Kentucky is carrying the United Methodist banner into a land where most of the people are Buddhist. The Rev. Michael W. Morrissey, Jr., and the Rev. Sherri Tabaka- Morrissey were commissioned on October 10 in Stamford, CT by the General Board of Global Ministries, the international mission agency of the denomination.

The new non-emergency medical transportation ministry at Henderson
Settlement assists seniors.
Henderson Settlement, a national mission institution of The United Methodist Church, has received a private foundation grant to provide non-emergency medical transportation for disabled persons and senior citizens in its rural area. “I can go to the doctor now,” said one regular participant in center activities on hearing of the award.

Directors of the mission agency met in Stamford, CT on October 9 through 12.

The United Nations Foundation is providing a $100,000 grant to help underwrite a meeting of United Methodist leaders that will focus on a possible churchwide response to global health care challenges. The grant, made to the Foundation for United Methodist Communications, was announced Oct. 10. Leaders from around the denomination will meet in Washington in December to address urgent issues such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, particularly on the continent of Africa.

My wife Rebecca and I grew up in the church. When I was 17 or 18, I struggled with God’s question: “Will you do whatever I ask you to do?” And I had trouble with that. Dr. Quipungo softly starts talking about a child that had died of complications from malaria the day before. She says the child's death was complicated by the need to give him a blood transfusion and oxygen.

Today I met a little girl whose father had earlier come to Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) requesting assistance for his daughter. After reviewing the facts, I had been able to determine that she was eligible for citizenship. They came to thank us because she received her naturalization certificate. She is still in grade school but old enough to realize the importance of that piece of paper.
