United Methodist Women called to assist in the disaster relief efforts of those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina’s devastating blow to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, the United Methodist Women’s Division is still working through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and General Board of Global Ministries’ networks to assess damage to national mission institutions and mission programs and personnel.

Hurricane Katrina ripped into the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday, battering the historic jazz city New Orleans, swamping resort towns and lowlands with a crushing surge of seawater and stranding people on rooftops.
As president of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), I am making this emergency appeal for United Methodists and their friends to supply Health Kits, bottled water and blankets for survivors of Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast. The need is desperate throughout the area devastated by the storm, especially among people who have been or are being evacuated from their homes.

UMCOR Begins Three-Stage Response to Hurricane Katrina August 30, 2005
In these early days after a disaster of this magnitude, there remains a state of emergency. Communication with the affected areas is difficult and details continue to be uncertain about persons and places connected with the United Methodist Church. But even as the official rescue efforts are occurring, UMCOR is engaged in the planning and strategizing for long-term recovery.

United Methodist churches around the Gulf Coast are responding to the needs in their communities in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, after the Category 4 storm made landfall in Louisiana Aug. 29. Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast twice Monday morning as a Category 4 storm with winds as high as 140 miles per hour, landing in Louisiana.

North Texas Conference Bishop and former General Board director Bishop Rhymes H. Moncure, Jr. preached during the 2005 School of Congregational Development, a rousing challenge for participants to get out of the “boat” of complacency and risk stepping out into the deep waters with Christ.
From August 3rd to 8th, 2005 in Dallas, TX, a record number of people attended the School of Congregational Development, an annual leadership conference to ignite and inspire the growth of United Methodist churches. More than 600 people attended the five-day session, with an additional 120 local church people participating in the Super Saturday workshops on August 6th.

On Friday, August 19, 2005, 50 directors and staff of the Women's Division — joined by members of the community — stood on a main street in Stamford, Conn., at a noon break from their National and International Committee meetings. In solidarity with the mothers of fallen soldiers camped outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Tex., the demonstrators prayed for peace, for fallen military and their families, and for all victims of the Iraq war.

Bishop Abel T. Muzorewa wants Christians to "climb out of their comfort zones" and bring people to Christ. His message was loud and clear on a day that brought people from all over Africa and the world to celebrate his 60 years of ministry. In his classic book Night comes to the Cumberlands, Henry Caudil states “The mountaineer from the earliest times applied (the term sticks) to the trunks of his great trees. Program Begins in Sierra Leone

A new United Methodist ministry of malaria control will mobilize already existing church- related medical facilities and their personnel to strike out against malaria. The program will pilot in Sierra Leone—a West African nation with a strong United Methodist network and a big malaria problem. Sub-Saharan Africa is hardest hit in the malaria pandemic. The initiative is sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries, the church’s mission board, and implemented by its health ministries arm and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

In a July 21 news conference, Johnnetta B. Cole marked her third anniversary as president of the historically black United Methodist women's school by again pledging that she will continue in the position until the school "is fully on solid ground" financially. Cole also offered a series of updates and said the theme for the coming school year would be, "Bennett College on the move from good to great."

The death of newly-elected vice president, Dr. John Garang has raised new concerns regarding the recent peace accord between northern and southern Sudan. A member of the southern Dinka ethnic group, Garang was a key player in the peace agreement that was forged last month. "Let us pray that the peace accord will be respected despite this great tragedy," said the Rev. R. Randy Day, chief executive of the General Board of Global Ministries. UMCOR program activities are located in Darfur, in the western portion of Sudan.

The dedication of a United Methodist theological seminary building in Moscow has been set for Sept. 10. Originally planned for May, the dedication had been postponed last winter because of a lack of funds. But with new donations and loans, the project has progressed, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, an executive with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.
