The Church and Christians have a responsibility
to address politics and social issues.
This is the belief of around 250 United
Methodist Women from around the country as they
arrive in Nashville on Saturday to address
social justice issues and discern their
responsibility as Christians to be actively
involved in the issues affecting women and
children. The theme of the quadrennial
National Seminar of United Methodist Women
taking place in Nashville August 2-8,2003
is "If not now, when?... if not me... who?"

Tragic stories about people's difficulties
leaving or entering Palestine/Israel are common
among Palestinians. One such story of a
Palestinian being denied basic human rights
struck a particularly personal note with the
staff at the International Center of Bethlehem
(ICB) this week. Internationally-recognized
musician Marwan Abado, an Austrian national of
Palestinian origin, was denied entry upon his
arrival on Sunday, 20 July and he was
subsequently deported on the 21st.

Medicine Box Update, July 2003

Even though contributions have declined in recent
years, the response shown since the last update
on March 27, 2003 has been quite impressive.
While only 17 boxes were donated and received at
Interchurch Medical Assistance in the first
quarter of 2003, more than 111 were donated in
the second quarter. We thank very much all
participants for this very encouraging response.

Who Cares for This Kid? UMCOR Does (Liberian Child Soldiers)

This boy soldier with his "teddy bear" backpack
was recently photographed on the streets of
Monrovia, Liberia. His country is at war. Through
UMCOR, caring people like you have helped re-
train 70 child soldiers each year and enabled
them return to school and find civilian jobs.
However, as this photograph makes clear, we have
much more work to do.

The World Hunger/Poverty Program has been an
integral part of the United Methodist Committee
on Relief’s (UMCOR) mission to enable United
Methodist congregations to put love into action.
More than 800 million people in the world go
hungry every day. This fact is difficult to
comprehend since we live in a world that has
unparalleled wealth and food production
capacity. It is not a question of whether there
is enough food but a
matter of accessibility and equal distribution
to all people, regardless of their class,
gender, geography, religion, earning power, or
status.

think about the men and women who labored to
grow the coffee in my cup. Now I see how a small
decision, like the brand of coffee I buy, can
make a difference in their lives.

Persistent famine is a theme throughout the
Bible, particularly in the Old Testament.
Abraham and Sarah suffered famine in their time
and had to move the whole family and all they
possessed into Egypt. Their son, Isaac, suffered
through another famine. Isaac’s son, Jacob,
endured yet another famine. Jacob’s son, Joseph,
saved his family and many thousands more from a
terrible famine that encompassed Egypt and
surrounding countries in the Middle East.

The Korean peninsula, with a 5000-year history
as one people and culture with common ethnic
origins, language, and traditions, was annexed
as a Japanese Protectorate in 1910. The
liberation of the peninsula from Japanese
occupation in 1945, after World War II, left a
geopolitical vacuum. Forces from the Soviet
Union, through the northern border, and from the
United States, through Japan in the south,
filled the vacuum. The country was divided along
the 38th parallel.

and worries about the family she left behind
several years ago.
Liberia is a long way from Rockville, Md., where
the United Methodist woman has lived since
coming to America in 1996. The pain is evident
in her voice as she talks about her family -
five children, six grandchildren and a great-
grandchild. She fears for their safety and
worries about whether they have enough food. Two
grandchildren, ages 18 months and 7 years old,
died of starvation in 1990.

The Gospel hymn primarily developed in the urban
revivals led by Dwight L. Moody, D.W. Whittle and
later, Billy Sunday. Each of these revival
preachers had as part of their team a song leader
who selected songs, sometimes wrote them and led
the singing for the services. Philip Bliss worked
with D.W. Whittle; Ira Sankey with Dwight Moody;
and Homer Rodeheaver with Billy Sunday.
