Access to Chicuque Rural Hospital Sees a Young, Pregnant Woman Through Malaria and Premature Delivery

At 25, Paulina Antonio was pregnant with her
second child and was due to deliver in March of
the coming year. Paulina, who lived just two
kilometers from Chicuque Rural Hospital (CRH),
preferred the care provided by the hospital as
opposed to the more common rural tradition of
giving birth at home with the assistance of a
midwife. Paulina's experience with the hospital
came early when she contracted malaria and was
required to stay there for a week during her
fifth month of pregnancy.

I read stories about the people of Mozambique,
sent to me by the Mozambique initiative, and my
memories of the 1998 trip are revived. I have
been deeply touched by people’s faith and their
devotion to God. Mozambican brothers and sisters
in Christ are kind to each other, to their
foreign guests and they keep covenant with God
regardless of the difficult financial situation,
poor living conditions, and consequences of
civil war.

Through Divine Intervention, Jeremias Found Chicuque Rural Hospital

A newborn fighting for her life. A burn victim. A
caring nurse. A young man learning to walk for
the first time. These are a few of the many faces
of Chicuque Rural Hospital. Founded by a
Methodist missionary in 1913, today the hospital
provides healthcare to approximately 500,000 men,
women and children in Mozambique, southeast
Africa. Jeremias Franca's face is a familiar one
at Chicuque. He is a Person in Mission (PIM) who
strongly believes that God led him to Chicuque
and feels very blessed to be the hospital's
administrator.

The Faroukhs walk across the border in the dark
before dawn, a Bronx family about to become
international flotsam. The wife pulls tight on
her blue cloth coat against the minus-5-degree
chill and wind, and tugs at the hand of her 5-
year-old son. He’s wrapped in a parka and
carries a red King Babar backpack. They’re
crying. “Cold,” she whispers. “It’s so cold.”
Her husband walks 10 yards behind, pulling three
stuffed valises wrapped in rope. He’s a slender
man, and his loafers slip and squeak in the
snow. (Washington Post, January 18, 2003)

Iraq: 'Whoever Brought the Medicine, Saved My Life ...'

No one can say why the tank crashed through the
wall of the Al Rashid psychiatric hospital in
Bagdad. However Dr. Abdul Heelo and his staff are
sure of what happened next: a large group of men
poured in through the gap left by the tank. The
intruders raped ten female patients, stole
equipment, destroyed much of the building and its
records, and rendered the hospital incapable of
providing much-needed psychiatric care for its
patients.

United Methodist missions have been affected by
the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorists attacks on
the United States. Some programs, such as UMCOR,
have spurred into action to respond to the needs
created by the attacks. Other ministries have
experienced a decline in funding, a rise in
costs, and a greater demand for services as a
result of the downturn in the economy that
spiraled from the time of the 9/11 attacks.

In 1998, United States officials gave a briefing
at the US Mission to the United Nations on US
efforts to challenge human rights abuses in many
other nations. Two questions were raised: given
the importance the United States places on human
rights, why is the United States taking so long
to ratify human rights conventions and why is it
so slow to report on its compliance with the
conventions it has ratified?

This year is the 300th anniversary of John
Wesley=s birth. Born June 28, 1703, Mr. Wesley
was one of 19 children B- 10 survived into
adulthood -- of Susanna and Samuel Wesley. Samuel
Wesley, a parish priest of the Church of England,
was a strict man. He had little material wealth
so his family lived in poverty most of the time.
Susanna Wesley, the daughter of a priest, had
received a sound education, which was unusual for
a girl at that time. She was well read and
supervised the education of her children.
