Dr. Lahi Luhahi and Yema Luhahi, United Methodist missionaries serving in Kenya.
Dr. Lahi and Yema Luhali are missionaries of the United Methodist Church who serve with distinction in Kenya. Assigned respectively to the Kenya Methodist University in business education; and to Maua Methodist Hospital in nursing education, Dr. and Mrs. Luhali are natives of the Republic of the Congo. They previously served as Mission Interpreters in the United States.

Water Shortages Continue in Basra, Iraq

The water lies stagnant and dirty in the irrigation canals of some of the poorest suburbs of Basra, Iraq's second largest city. Green and foul, this is the water that the city's two million inhabitants use for washing. And if for some reason, the water tanks brought in by NGOs cannot get through to the areas, people come to these canals and the dilapidated wells to draw their drinking water.

Describing Christian community as "our DNA," the president of the United Methodist bishops called on her colleagues to lead the church in creating a community that overcomes divisions and gives hope to a world gripped by fear. "Christian community is embedded in our United Methodist identity," Bishop Sharon A. Brown Christopher told the international Council of Bishops. "It is our DNA. The practice of our Christian faith, (John) Wesley style, is all about connection."

A one-page advertisement in The Christian Century magazine, signed by more than 100 United Methodists, has called on U.S. President George Bush to "repent" of certain domestic and foreign policies, including the use of violence in dealing with Iraq.

On Saturday evening, March 22, the Northern Light Rally for Peace spanned the Route 22 bridge over Lake Champlain between Rouses Point, New York and Alburg, Vermont. The idea grew out of a friendly conversation over breakfast among clergy and lay folks of several denominations.
The theme of light as a beacon of hope penetrated our organization for the rally. One of those on the organizing committee was Heather Ross, who grew up in Rouses Point. She wrote a powerful poem for the occasion:

A bill providing tax breaks for charitable giving and more than $1 billion for social service grants to states has passed the Senate. Bearing almost no resemblance to President Bush's "faith-based initiative" proposal, the stripped-down piece of legislation encourages giving to charities by granting non-itemizing taxpayers a tax deduction of up to $250 for their gifts. The Senate passed the bill in a 95- 5 vote April 9.

When bombs started falling on Iraq, the Rev. Dick Capron, a United Methodist pastor in Delanson, N.Y., decided to embody his prayers for peace by beginning a spiritual fast. The 54-year-old pastor and pastoral counselor has maintained his fast since March 19, when U.S.-led forces began the military action to topple Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

War brings death and destruction in the lives of so many. We weep with those who weep and affirm that war is not compatible with the teachings of Christ, as stated in the Social Principles, and we grieve at the division within the household of faith in time of war. Out of a sense of grief and pain and as followers of the Prince of Peace, we pray and hope constantly for peace.

Twenty-four staff from the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries are retiring June 30 because of changes in the denomination's pension plan.
The list of retirees was presented during the agency's April 7-10 meeting in Birmingham.
During his address to board directors, the Rev. R. Randy Day, chief executive, spoke about his regret that pension changes for lay employees could affect the board's operations.

Current events in Iraq and North Korea commanded attention when the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries met April 7-10.
Board directors also forwarded a raft of social resolutions to be considered by the denomination's top legislative body next year and decided to have a first-ever telethon to raise money for mission projects.

The new chief executive of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries is looking beyond the agency's financial constraints to find ways to achieve its goals. He believes the church's assets of faith, hope and love can propel it forward.

Staff Treasurer Stephen Feerrar had good news and bad news for the financially struggling United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.
With a strong fourth quarter and stringent attention to cost control, expenses came in at $3.5 million below budget in 2002, he told board directors during the agency's April 7-10 spring meeting. His report did not include financial summaries for the Women's Division or Health and Relief unit.

UMCOR Plans for Iraq Relief Assistance

The United Methodist Committee on Relief is prepared to offer training and technical assistance to many of the church-based humanitarian efforts in Iraq, according to the Rev. Paul Dirdak. Dirdak, who leads the agency, explained those plans when UMCOR directors gathered April 8 during the spring meeting of the agency's parent organization, the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.

Relief Items Arrive Safely in Iraq

Relief supplies from The United Methodist Committee on Relief's ecumenical partners have arrived in Iraq; more are waiting for delivery. Yesterday Action by Churches Together (ACT) reported that a truckload of relief items sent ot Mosul in Iraq has arrived safely in Mosul. Church World Service also said yesterday that a third shipment of supplies for pediatric hospitals is ready to leave Jordan as soon as it becomes possible to cross the border into Iraq and continue onward to Baghdad.

Grass-roots advocacy is essential for continued school reform, according to a longtime educator.
David Hornbeck, chairman and founding counsel for Good Schools Pennsylvania, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to public education reform, spoke during the April 4-7 meeting of the Women's Division, United Methodist Board of Global Ministries. He was named in March as the new president and chief executive officer of the International Youth Foundation.

Joyce Sohl does not believe that her protest of the U.S.-led war against Iraq makes her unpatriotic.
As a concerned Christian and American, she said, "I must protest this war as I feel God is calling me to do..." Sohl is chief executive of the Women's Division of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries. Public education across the United States has become a high-stakes game. If at-risk students do not meet state-developed standards - determined by a test -- students can go elsewhere, schools can lose funding or be closed down, and highly qualified teachers can lose jobs.

The United Methodist Church's African-American caucus is urging President Bush and the U.S. Congress to bring the war in Iraq to a speedy end and to pursue peace at all costs.
The Black Methodists for Church Renewal passed a resolution April 4 opposing war and calling for peace. The group, describing itself as "a conscience for social justice," also expressed support for the deployed troops. The statement came during the caucus' April 2-5 annual meeting.

As the first United States air strikes hit Baghdad two weeks ago, Malual Agu Malual Dor and his family headed for safety. Their destination was "Camp B," which has been set aside for third country nationals (TCNs), the acronym given people fleeing the war who are not Iraqi nationals.

Shipment of Soap for Pediatric Hospitals Arrives in Baghdad: Second Round of All Our Children Supplies to Benefit Nearly 15,000 Iraqi Children

A shipment of badly needed personal hygiene soap and laundry detergent for Iraqi children arrived in Baghdad on March 31 as part of the All Our Children campaign, a multi-agency effort. UMCOR is supporting this campaign. The 5.5 metric tons of soap-- enough to support the hygiene needs of 14,688 Iraqi children for six months-- and 5.8 metric tons of laundry detergent will be distributed by CARE Iraq to support UNICEF'S child nutrition program in Iraq.

Tents filled the small yard at the United Methodist Building, providing support for the rally under way across the street at the Supreme Court.
Inside the courthouse, the justices were to hear arguments in two cases - Grutter vs. Bollinger and Gratz vs. Bollinger - concerning affirmative action in University of Michigan admissions policies. The court's decision, expected this summer, will have implications for affirmative- action policies nationwide.

The United Methodist making a witness for peace in Baghdad has left Iraq along with other members of the Christian Peacemakers Teams and Iraq Peace Team.
Scott Kerr, 27, a member of First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove, Ill., and the other team members managed to travel safely from the Iraqi capital to the Iraq-Jordan border, and they crossed into Jordan on April 1.
