Water Shortages Continue in Basra, Iraq

The water lies stagnant and dirty in the
irrigation canals of some of the poorest suburbs
of Basra, Iraq's second largest city. Green and
foul, this is the water that the city's two
million inhabitants use for washing. And if for
some reason, the water tanks brought in by NGOs
cannot get through to the areas, people come to
these canals and the dilapidated wells to draw
their drinking water.

On Saturday evening, March 22, the Northern
Light Rally for Peace spanned the Route 22

Ross, who grew up in Rouses Point. She wrote a
powerful poem for the occasion:

broken again and again for us, and by us, we ask
for your presence in our hour of need. Heal us
from our warring ways. We confess that we often
want a triumphant God to act in might, but you
offer to suffer with us. Give us the courage
not to conform to the violent ways of this
world. Transform our fears into hopes and
empower us to turn the tables on any who seek to

Prayer: O wounded God, we your people are
afflicted by violence, perplexed by fear and
hatred, persecuted for being different, and
struck down by the ways of war. We lose heart!
What can we do at this hour? Let your
compassion – your suffering with us -- be felt
in each of our hearts so that we too may,
through pain and suffering with others... Make
us, your wounded, warring and hurting children,
be vessels of compassion for all our sisters and
brothers, even our enemies. For in you we do
not lose heart! Amen.
