R. Randy Day, General Secretary, General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church
“To Seek Peace, Freedom and Justice” is one of the four goals of the General Board of Global Ministries. I want to lift up these interrelated, often elusive, values as we enter 2004 as individuals, families, the Church and a global human family.

R. Randy Day, General Secretary, General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church
Advent and Christmas have been taken to a new depth for me this year, as I've contemplated the arrival of the Prince of Peace while visiting Hiroshima and Nagasaki in mid- December....Violence and Christmas do not go together. Nuclear weapons, conventional weapons, land mines, handguns - none of these belongs in the Nativity. Yet, the world is saturated with them, and Christians own and use them.

In January 2002, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) into law. No Child Left Behind reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) - the principal federal law affecting education from kindergarten through high school. Buried within the 650 pages of the No Child Left Behind Act is Section 9528, which requires secondary schools to release student directory information for juniors and seniors to military recruiters upon request.

'All Our Children' Launches Theater Project in Baghdad
Sick child at a hospital in Basra, Iraq.
Early in December the first performance of the children's theater project happened at Iraq's only institute for autistic people. The institute's director said, "I saw something spark in the children I haven't seen in five years," the entire length of her tenure. Affectless children laughed for the first time. "All Our Children" has received funding from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

West African 'Miracle Tree' Offers Nutritional Benefits
The red ribbon and globe are symbols of UNAID's World AIDS Campaign.
The moringa is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree, which has the potential of building immune systems, an important consideration in treating AIDS. Rich in iron and potassium, it flourishes in tropical settings, and produces so many useful vitamins that many call it "the miracle tree." With four times the amount of vitamin A in carrots, the moringa helps prevent blindness

Marilyn S. Benson is a Church & Community Worker and Deaconess at Mary’s Cradle Maternal & Infant Resource Center, Bluefield, West Virginia
When Mary’s Cradle (Mary’s Cradle Maternal & Infant Resource Center) was itself in its infancy, I had an experience I shall always remember. A young family was referred to Mary’s Cradle by their social worker. The couple was expecting their fourth child. We were able to provide them with a crib and a few other infant items. Timothy was born right on schedule on December 22 and came home from the hospital the next day.

Holiday Season of Conscience  -- End Child Labor Campaign
No one wants to purchase products made by children, teenaged girls--or any workers-- stripped of their rights and forced to work long hours in harsh sweatshop conditions under armed guards for wages of 20-30¢ an hour. The people of the United States deserve the chance to raise our voices and affirm the dignity of life and human rights over corporate indifference and greed.

The Streyffelers are missionaries of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church assigned to Senegal, West Africa.
Our life in Senegal was for the most part shaped by the sights and sounds of Islam the call to prayer from nearby mosques, local Marabouts (religious leaders) displaying their piety though the recitation of the Quran over a loud speaker long into the night, colorful displays of dress by men and women on their way to a Muslim baptism or wedding, bus loads of pilgrims headed to a nearby open field to commemorate the birthday of their Marabout.

UMCOR Calls for More Response to Churchwide Appeal
This family's home in Moore, OK was destroyed by a tornado.
The relief agency's "Churchwide Appeal for USA Domestic Disasters," launched in October, had only drawn in tens of thousands of dollars in donations by early December, far short of an anticipated $2 million goal. Most churchwide appeals bring in an average of $3 million to $4 million. The appeal for Hurricane Mitch in 1998- 99, which devastated parts of the United States, Caribbean and Central America, brought in nearly $12 million.

All I Want for Christmas Is-- A Toothbrush, Some Pencils, a Baby Blanket, Needles and Thread
If you are looking for meaningful ways to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, UMCOR's Material Resource Ministry offers several opportunities. You can give a desperately needed gift, like a health kit, to someone in a war-torn country, someone who has been displaced from their home, someone who has no home but the city streets or a tent in a refugee camp, or someone who lives in poverty. Thousands of people will be thrilled to receive a new toothbrush, some notebook paper, fabric for a skirt, or a receiving blanket for their new baby

Advent Calendar 2003
Thanks again to Rev. Tom Mousin and Rev. Merry Watters, United Methodist pastors serving churches in the Troy conference, for the Advent calendar. They have worked together to create a calendar each Advent season for the last 12 years.
Pastor Watters colors the calendars and mails them to friends and family instead of sending more traditional Christmas cards. What better gift could one give than sharing the true meaning and spirit of the holiday season?

Sister Jessie Kellyman, from Belize in Central America
On our drive home from the airport after arriving in Belize City for the first time, The Rev. Bruce Swapp (then a pastor in Belize, now Connectional President of the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas) suddenly stopped the van and pushed the door open to admit a tiny, elderly lady with papaya leaves wrapped tightly around her knees and dressed in a ragged, old dress. She had a wonderful smile and introduced herself as Sister Jessie.

Getting right with God is about serving one another out of our God-given gifts. The form of that service will be unique for each of us just as our relationships with God are unique. When combined, our gifts can mean abundant life for all people.
