Economic factors and the specter of war have led
to the postponement of Global Gathering IV, a
celebration of the international mission of The
United Methodist Church, sponsored by its
mission agency, the General Board of Global
Ministries. It had been scheduled for mid-April
in Birmingham, Alabama.

The United Methodist General Board of Global
Ministries today issued an international call
for prayer and advocacy for peace and justice in
Iraq.
“We are praying that God will provide an
alternative to a United States-led attack on
Iraq, and we are also praying that the leaders
of Iraq will give strong assurances of their
commitment to peace and freedom for their
people,” said the Rev. R. Randy Day, general
secretary of the agency that has missionary and
humanitarian work in 74 countries.

During his trip to South Korea in November 2002,
the Rev. R. Randy Day, General Secretary-elect
of the General Board of Global Ministries,
visited the Yanhwajin Foreigners’ Cemetery, the
grave site of 40 missionaries sent by the United
Methodist Church and its predecessor
denominations in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Most regular missionaries of The United
Methodist Church whose contracts expire this
year will be reassigned.
“The loss of regular (“standard support”)
missionaries in 2003 will be even smaller than
projected late last year,” according to a joint
announcement by Bishop Joel N. Martinez of San
Antonio, president of the board, and the Rev. R.
Randy Day, general secretary.

United Methodist Task Force on Developmental Disabilities

The Mission of the United Methodist Task Force on
Developmental Disabilities is to increase
awareness of the needs of persons with
developmental disabilities and their families,
identify resources and services, educate the
Church to use their gifts and graces, affirm self-
worth and dignity, cooperate in ecumenical and
interfaith activities. The task force is
sponsored by the Health & Welfare Ministries unit
of the General Board of Global Ministries.

Ten young adults recently gathered at Gammon
Seminary in Atlanta for three days of
reflection, analysis and rededication to
Christian service. Their vision and goals
reflect their diversity, their commitment to
God's mission is a shared foundation as they
embark on various paths: seminary, secular
occupations, graduate school, and continued
ministry.

There is broken glass everywhere; on the floors,
covering the tables, covering papers, on beds.
The Christian leaders of Gaza have gathered to
offer their support and condemn the bombing of
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, located within
the Ahli Arab Hospital compound. The Church is
in the center of the hospital complex, and
surrounded by buildings flying the Red Cross and
Anglican flags.

“Since September 11, 2001, our giving has been
way down, both in funds and material goods,” was
the sad news from Harrietta Reynolds, the
interim director of Sager-Brown in Baldwin,
Louisiana. Glenn Druilhet, director of the UMCOR
Depot, confirmed it. “This is really different
this year, all this empty space. Normally our
staging area would be packed with kits and
supplies, but it’s empty.”

Primetimers: An Educational Experience for Older Persons

In the course of a typical United Methodist
Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM, or VIM) experience,
teams often work 70% of the time and learn,
sightsee, and rest from their travels the
remainder. In a Primetimer experience, we
anticipate perhaps as much as 60% of the time
would be used in educational settings. The other
portion of the time would be in Christian service.

Grant from UMCOR Helps 9/11 Victims in Virginia

Some of the hidden victims of September 11 live
in the Route One Corridor just south of
Washington. They are minimum-wage earners who
cleaned motel rooms, served food in the
restaurants, worked in shops catering to tourists
at Mount Vernon and other attractions, or drove
taxis to nearby Reagan National Airport. After
the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade
Center, tourist trade dropped dramatically,
taking jobs with it.

An estimated 3,200 people filled the National
Cathedral Jan. 20 to pray for a peaceful
resolution of the Iraq crisis. Afterward,
worshipers marched down Massachusetts Avenue to
the White House, bearing candles and "War Is Not
the Answer" placards.

Initiative on Children and Poverty in 1996, the
goal of reshaping the mostly middle-class U.S.
church in response to children and the poor was

The Beit Sahour Medical Clinic is one of the
partner community based agencies of GBGM which
serves Palestinians living in the Bethlehem and
Beit Sahour communities and southern part of the
Occupied Territory of the West Bank.
We just received the following letter from Dr.
Majed Nassar, Director of the Clinic and Deputy
Director of the Health Work Committees of
Palestine, who tells of an attack on the clinic
by Israeli soldiers which took place January 16,
2003.

and in San Francisco, CA to join their voices
together for peace!

Their robes may look different, but when it
comes to working on behalf of the Holy Land's
dwindling Christian population, the Heads of
Churches and Christian communities in Jerusalem
have become increasingly unified.
Next week, these leaders and their churches plan
to celebrate their common bond in Christ during
the annual Week of Christian Unity. This week
long series of prayer and worship services will
kick off at St. George's Cathedral on Sunday
evening.

Souper Bowl Sunday: Youth Collect Dollars for World Hunger

As football teams play each other across the
country to see who will meet in the Super Bowl on
January 26, thousands of congregations are
teaming up to help end world hunger. "The Souper
Bowl of Caring" is an annual faith-based event
led locally by young people, who collect
donations in soup pots as parishioners leave
religious services.

As a United Methodist pastor, the Rev. R. Randy
Day has spent much of his career working at the
local church level. Now, as the new chief
executive of the denomination’s largest agency,
Day plans to make interaction with congregations
a priority. The 55-year-old pastor, who took
office Jan. 1, acknowledges that many church
members already have a good understanding of
mission, and he intends for the United Methodist
Board of Global Ministries to "work even closer
than it has with the local churches."

North Korea recently surprised the world by
revealing in October that it had a new nuclear
program. By mid-December it began removing the
United Nations placed nuclear facilities
monitoring devices and restarting its nuclear
program. United National inspectors were ordered
to leave the country, which they did by the end
of the year.
