A mission team from Iowa returned to where it
all began –– dilapidated farmhouses –– to get
Africa University ready for the masses coming to
celebrate the school’’s first decade.
"For me, it’’s a privilege to work with the
folks of Zimbabwe, whether it is using a striker
to cut grass in order to paint a wall, or
holding a baby in the Fairfield Orphanage or
consulting with the Africa University Counseling
service," says Bob Hoover, a retired pastor from
Solon, Iowa

The Native Americans on the Seminole Reservation
in Florida have waited more than 30 years for a
United Methodist pastor, and now they finally
have one.
The Rev. Delton Collins, a Lumbee Indian and
local pastor from the Western North Carolina
Annual Conference, has been appointed to serve
on the reservation and to establish a church.

United Methodist Network of Clinics Helps Immigrants

At a time when immigrants and refugees face
increasing restrictions by the U.S. government,
United Methodists are expanding a national
network of immigration clinics to provide
assistance. Justice for Our Neighbors, a program
started in 1999 by the United Methodist Committee
on Relief and the Just Neighbors Ministry in
Virginia, got a financial boost this spring when
UMCOR's board of directors approved funding of
$600,000 over a three-year period.

The people of the rapidly growing Methodist
Church of Cuba now have a central gathering
place for worship and other programs.

The May 24 dedication of Templo del Campamento
Canaan (Camp Canaan Temple) in Miller, Cuba
attracted nearly 4,000 people, many of whom
traveled as long as 9 hours by truck and bus to
attend the service. Participants included 94
representatives from United Methodist Volunteers
in Mission (UMVIM) teams from the United States.

The American Red Cross, in conjunction with
the New York Disaster Response Interfaith,
invited religious representatives to a June 17
conference in New York to explore the impact of
the 9/11 attacks on faith communities and their
leaders. United Methodists were among the
participants.

A conference involving representatives from the
Muslim, Jewish and Christian faiths promises to
forge a path of interreligious cooperation and
contribute to peace efforts in the former
Yugoslav republic of Macedonia.
From May 10 to 14, 2002, over forty
international scholars and nearly fifty local
scholars and leaders from the three faith
traditions met in a 'trialogue' in the capital
city of Skopje. The theme for the conference
was 'Confidence Building Among the Churches and
Religious Communities in Macedonia through
Dialogue.'

The United Methodist Annual (regional)
Conference of Switzerland/France has agreed with
a request from an autonomous group of French
Methodist churches to join the denomination.
Meeting in early June in Basel, Switzerland, the
conference delegates voted to integrate the
Methodist Church in France into The United
Methodist Church during the next three years,
according to the Rev. Peter Siegfried, a
conference member and an executive with the
United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.

El Nuevo Día, a Puerto Rican newspaper on June 6
reported the sentences imposed by the Federal
District Court of Puerto Rico to civil
disobedients protesting the US Navy bombing of
Vieques. Sister Carmen González Arias, a Roman
Catholic nun was sentenced to 60 days in
prison. Rev. Pablo Maysonet, an Episcopal
priest, was sentenced to 30 days in prison.

A director of financial development has been
named for Encounter with Christ in Latin America
and the Caribbean, a mission initiative of the
United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.
Effective July 1, the Rev. C. Rex Bevins
will help lead the $25 million fund-raising
drive for the board’s permanent fund, No.
025100, which is designed to support mission
partnerships with Methodist churches throughout
the Southern Hemisphere. Bevins is retiring at
the end of June as senior pastor of St. Paul
United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Neb.

UMCOR Program Begins for 9/11 Victims

A $5 million program focusing on assistance to
victims of the Sept. 11 attacks begins full-
fledged operations in June. Established by the
United Methodist Committee on Relief, the case
management program receives its financial support
from the denomination's "Love in the Midst of
Tragedy" fund, which was a response to the
attacks.
