Workers in the Philippines are dealing with the
same issues –– the need for a living wage, the
effects of globalization and the privatization
of companies –– that U.S. workers face, according
to a United Methodist organizer there.
The Rev. Israel Alvaran, assigned by the church
as a person-in-mission to focus specifically on
labor issues, discussed the situation in the
Philippines while visiting United Methodist
Board of
Global Ministries offices in New York.

The siege of the Church of the Nativity has
ended and the Israeli tanks and international
camera crews have withdrawn, but life for
Palestinians remains harsh. Israeli tanks,
soldiers and checkpoints still surround
Bethlehem, ready at a moments notice to
reenter. New roads, for Israeli settler use
only, are being cut through Palestinian farmland
and further isolate the residents of Bethlehem.

Officers of the United Methodist Women's
Division delivered close to 7000 letters to
members of Congress
yesterday with one message - quality child care
should be a priority to help families in our
country. The letters were written at the
April 25-28 United Methodist Women's Assembly in
Philadelphia, Penn., and they urge Congressional
members to reauthorize the
Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG)
and add $20 billion of funding
over the next five years.

In Ministry with the Kaiowá People of Brazil--Building Stronger Bodies and Communities (UMCOR Story of the Month)

Since 1978 the Methodist Church of Brazil has
been working with the indigenous Kaiowá-Guarani
people of Tapeporã, in the southern part of the
state of Mato Grosso do Sul. UMCOR provides
financial support to two of the mission's
projects: the Mechanical Cow and the Dental Care
Outreach Program.

mile long refugee camp in western Tanzania. It
is called Mtabili and it is home to 13,000 people
from Burundi, Rwanda and other countries. Many

A Latin American and Caribbean Regional
Gathering of GBGM mission partners will be held
in Panama City, Panama from May 10-14. During
the current quadrennium GBGM will sponsor a
series of Global Regional Gatherings of mission
leaders, held on sites in the Pacific Islands,
Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia,
Africa, and the United States.

missionary body," according to a United
Methodist theologian.

Christians in Pakistan and elsewhere must
provide a positive alternative to extremists who
advocate violence, according to a prominent
bishop there.
"The terrorists are the ambassadors of death and
destruction," said Bishop Alexander John Malik
of the Diocese of Lahore, Church of

to be the ambassadors of light and hope."
