the General Board of Global Ministries of The
United Methodist Church is deeply pained at the
recent atrocities perpetrated on the people of

violence in Palestine and Israel. We are ever
present in thought, prayers, words, and actions
with all of those who have lost loved ones, for
the
injured, for those whose home, neighborhoods,
schools, medical facilities, and places of

The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries,
like many other organizations, benefitted from
the robust economy of the late 1990s.
The benefits were so great that the agency
authorized $60 million in new mission programs,
financed by unrealized capital gains, between
1997 and 1999. Another $12 million was advanced
to the Missionary Health Benefit Trust. But the
use of capital gains in this way would later
prove to be "problematic," according to GBGM
treasurer Stephen
Feerrar and the current funding shortfall is
expected to continue into 2003.

deadly civil war, thousands of United Methodists
took refuge across the border in the neighboring
Republic of Guinea. The refugees included
pastors, teachers, medical workers, and farmers.
Soon they were at work witnessing God*s presence
among the people in the camp. Congregations
formed. Makeshift schools were opened. A small
amount of health care was offered. And yet
another United Methodist mission was underway.

Providing Health Care at the Top of the World: UMCOR Advance Story of the Month

If you lived in the eastern hills of rural
Nepal, getting even basic medical care would be a
challenge. First of all, the only way to travel
is by foot. There are no roads. There may be a
health post in your village, but it is run by the
government and the people who are supposed to
staff it may not show up for months at a time.
There is only one hospital for five districts. It
is part of the Okhaldhunga Health Project, a
ministry of the United Mission to Nepal. The
hospital has 32 beds for a population of 150,000.
