We are always praying for missionaries serving
around the world. In this moment, we focus on
reflections of missionaries serving in the
United
States. Among missionaries assigned by the
General Board of Global Ministries of The United
Methodist Church are many who serve in
impoverished regions of the country and whose
work, at this time of struggle throughout the
country takes on even greater meaning. Witness
of one of these missionaries follow:

Dear Friends,
As word about the latest attack on Israelis came
last night, I was sick and heartbroken.
The carnage and destruction of such attacks are
unspeakable always. But, coming as
this one did in the midst of a Seder celebration
for the beginning of Pesach (Passover), I
was even more horrified. The senseless and
brutal killing of people while participating in
acts of worship strike at the very heart of all
that people of faith hold sacred.

Food Pantry Assists Hidden Victims of Sept. 11: Love in the Midst of Tragedy (UMCOR)

The economic impact of Sept. 11 registered at
the food pantry within a week. After Sept. 11,
the October and November distributions hit an all-
time peak of nearly 70,000 meals. "The United
Methodist Committee on Relief has been wonderful
and totally essential to meet the increase and
need in providing food," executive director
Doreen Wohl says. "Without it, we would be
turning people away."

How Many Zarehs Are There? Finding Hunger in Afghanistan

On the map Afghanistan looks like a place one
can understand. It has towns and mountains. It
has roads for people and goods to travel. So why,
eight weeks after the worst of the war in
Afghanistan was over, were people still eating
grass just one inch away on a highway map from
the major Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif?
The aid truck sitting in the courtyard of a
merchant in that city was one clue. Immobile, out
in the cold, it was a world away from official
pronouncements about "famine averted" in
Afghanistan.

The Rev. Sandra Olewine, GBGM missionary in
Palestine, reports on this week's events:
At 11:30 pm last night, the drone returned. For
an hour it buzzed low over the city of
Bethlehem. The sound became tortuous after a
while, like a horrible mosquito that would not
go away. Sleep is impossible as it whines
through the night sky. At 12:30 am, an F-16
returned, flying high overhead. A couple of
speeding passes, then suddenly down it screamed
again, as one more bomb was dropped on the
battered grounds of the police station.

When the latest round of Israeli bombs fell on
Bethlehem at 5:10 a.m. on
March 7, the impact knocked a sleeping Sandra
Olewine off her living room
couch.
The second blast shook pictures off the wall,
blew open the front door of
the apartment house, dropped shrapnel on the
roof and showered glass from a
neighbor's home onto her balcony. When the
explosions stopped at 5:45 a.m.,
Olewine, a United Methodist missionary, found
that homes and businesses on
the street that also contained a Palestinian
police station had been ruined.

'The Porch Light Is On': A United Methodist Church Prayerfully Waits for a Sudanese Refugee Family (UMCOR Story of the Month)

John and Sarah have been waiting for a new
home for years. They are of the Nuer tribe, one
of the most persecuted tribes in Southern Sudan.
They are Protestant Christians and farmers. Their
family was scheduled to fly to their new home
in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on September 14, 2001
where the Genesis United Methodist Church was
waiting to welcome them. But the events of
September 11 put their plans on hold. After the
11th, the United States government cancelled all
refugee arrivals and has given extra scrutiny to
African and Middle Eastern refugees.
