Young women work as weavers in a new business created by a small AREGAK loan in Armenia.

Esther works hard; very hard. She is up before dawn and goes to bed long after sunset. She begins her day when the roosters, who serve as alarm clocks for Esther and her neighbors, awaken her before the sun peeks over the hills. By the light of a kerosene lamp, Esther prepares breakfast for her five children and husband. Esther and fourteen others, including one man, formed the Anyabor Women's Group with the goal of acquiring their own cassava mill, located in their village, under their ownership and management.

Church Must Make AIDS Ministry a Priority: A Commentary by the Rev. Donald E. Messer
The Rev. Donald Messer (right) visits with a patient at Tambaram hospital, the largest AIDS hospital in India. The hospital, located outside the southeastern coastal city of Chennai (Madras), is at 130 percent capacity, and more patients are streaming through the gates every day, Messer says.

I walked for two hours through the largest AIDS hospital in India during December, speaking with patients and helping deliver 700 Christmas gifts. In one of the last wards of women patients, I saw a small girl outside the bar-like windows, crying for her mother inside. A few moments later, she whisked past me and ran to her mother's side. The mother took the girl into her arms and showed the child the new sari that I had just given her.

As we read once more of the birth of the Prince of Peace and heard the words of the angels, "Do not be afraid, for I bring you tidings of great joy," it was not the same. For we are afraid. Many of us feel vulnerable for the first time in our lives. In a season when we saw and heard the word "peace" more than any other time of the year, we were not at peace in our nation, in our world, or even in our hearts.
