Schools and Homes Top Priority in Devastated Goma

"I would like to go to school again", says ten-
year old Bibile. She is standing around with a
group of other children on a section of the lava
that nearly two weeks ago destroyed much of the
town center of Goma in the Democratic Republic of
Congo (DRC). The lava flow destroyed a school run
by the Baptist church close to where they are
standing, as well as other schools in the center
of town.

Esther and fourteen others, including one man,
formed the Anyabor Women's Group with the goal
of
acquiring their own cassava mill, located in

Church Must Make AIDS Ministry a Priority: A Commentary by the Rev. Donald E. Messer

I walked for two hours through the largest
AIDS hospital in India during December, speaking
with patients and helping deliver 700 Christmas
gifts. In one of the last wards of women
patients, I saw a small girl outside the bar-like
windows, crying for her mother inside. A few
moments later, she whisked past me and ran to her
mother's side. The mother took the girl into her
arms and showed the child the new sari that I had
just given her.

The past Christmas season was a bit different for
everyone. As we read once more of the birth of
the Prince of Peace and heard the words of the
angels, "Do not be afraid, for I bring you
tidings of great joy," it was not the same. For
we are afraid. Many of us feel vulnerable for the
first time in our lives. In a season when we saw
and heard the word "peace" more than any other
time of the year, we were not at peace in our
nation, in our world, or even in our hearts.
