Assignment in Ghana has given me opportunity to
work in a Liberian refugee camp located five
miles outside Accra. It is an experience I
cherish. Among the many programs held for youth
was one that exposed them to the effects of
drugs
on people.

Two weeks after the tragedy in New York,
Pennsylvania and the Pentagon, people in the U.S.
are returning to their daily routines, but life
will never be the same. Increased presence of
police and security officials at schools,
shopping malls, airports and train stations are
reminders of innocence lost.

...Mission is a two-way street. Most career
missionaries come to that realization very
quickly. What we have to offer is so tiny
compared to what we receive, that it's almost
embarrassing...

If United Methodist women in the Philippines had
their way, two things would happen. In December
of this year (2000) a woman would be elected
bishop. And their church, which is under the
central conference structure, would vote to
become self-reliant and autonomous.

...In our work with the children in Sunday
School, Kid's Club and the girl's group we see
the results of very difficult family situations
that have been described to us. Many children
are
being raised by single mothers or by
grandparents
so many in fact that while schools and churches
give great attention to Mother's Day, they
frequently skip Father's Day as it causes too
much negative impact.

The Mary Johnston Hospital (MJH) Outreach
Program
invited me to become a part of their team. They
adopted a Barangay (a community) and have a two-
year plan to deal with the needs of adults and
children. No one, however, had any ideas as to
what to do with the youth! They said that they
are sure that God brought us together since I
feel a call to ministry with youth, and there
was
need for a youth minister for this adopted
community.

The depth of the shock, horror, pain, and sadness
which we feel as the news of Tuesday's
unspeakable tragedies unfold cannot be expressed
in words. We are ever present in thought,
prayers, words, and actions for those who have
lost their lives and their loved ones, and with
all of those who still do not know if their
friends and families are unharmed. Their pain is
our pain.

grieve for the family."

There is a popular African American spiritual
with the refrain, "Jesus is a rock in a weary
land; he's a shelter in the time of
storm . . . ." It was thus quite fitting that the
Pacific Northwest Annual Conference used a rock
in the send-off ceremony of a United Methodist
Volunteers in Mission (VIM) team departing for
the Congo.

Update on Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone's rebels, the Revolutionary United
Front (RUF), who have fought a bitter eight-year
civil war mostly in the countryside, finally
brought their armed campaign to Freetown, Sierra
Leone's capital, earlier this year. Citing
sources within the Nigerian-led West African
ECOMOG forces, several news organizations have
reported that the rebels infiltrated Freetown
beginning in December by disguising themselves as
refugees.

mothers' grief in the face of suffering of their

Kenyatta Avenue, one of the busiest streets in
Kenya's capital city of Nairobi. The woman was
pictured with her three children, two of them
seated, one of them carrying the youngest. Under
the portrait was a caption that ended with the

I was assigned to Tete as a teacher trainer, but

needed an instructor in this area. At the

school, there are about 300 students. It
functions at two levels with 6th-8th grades in
the mornings and 9th-10th grades in the
