Two weeks after the tragedy in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon, people in the U.S. are returning to their daily routines, but life will never be the same. ...Mission is a two-way street. Most career missionaries come to that realization very quickly. What we have to offer is so tiny compared to what we receive, that it's almost embarrassing...

If United Methodist women in the Philippines had their way, two things would happen. In December of this year (2000) a woman would be elected bishop. And their church, which is under the central conference structure, would vote to become self-reliant and autonomous.

Small memorials of flowers and candles dotted sidewalks, storefronts, and grassy spots all over New York since September 11, 2001. A sign saying
One week after the tragedy struck New York, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and the nation on September 11, 2001, there are signs of hope. The healing process began with candlelight gatherings all across the region.

...In our work with the children in Sunday School, Kid's Club and the girl's group we see the results of very difficult family situations that have been described to us. Many children are being raised by single mothers or by grandparents so many in fact that while schools and churches give great attention to Mother's Day, they frequently skip Father's Day as it causes too much negative impact.

Photo of Mary Johnston Hospital, 2000.
The Mary Johnston Hospital (MJH) Outreach Program invited me to become a part of their team. They adopted a Barangay (a community) and have a two- year plan to deal with the needs of adults and children. No one, however, had any ideas as to what to do with the youth! They said that they are sure that God brought us together since I feel a call to ministry with youth, and there was need for a youth minister for this adopted community.

Manhattan skyline with smoke from the World Trade Center area after the September 11, 2001 disaster.
The depth of the shock, horror, pain, and sadness which we feel as the news of Tuesday's unspeakable tragedies unfold cannot be expressed in words. We are ever present in thought, prayers, words, and actions for those who have lost their lives and their loved ones, and with all of those who still do not know if their friends and families are unharmed. Their pain is our pain.

There is a popular African American spiritual with the refrain, "Jesus is a rock in a weary land; he's a shelter in the time of storm . . . ." It was thus quite fitting that the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference used a rock in the send-off ceremony of a United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (VIM) team departing for the Congo.

PAUL MATHERI of Nairobi, Kenya, speaks of mothers' grief in the face of suffering of their children. The April 12 edition of Daily Nation, a local news magazine, carried a picture of a woman on Kenyatta Avenue, one of the busiest streets in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi. The woman was pictured with her three children, two of them seated, one of them carrying the youngest. Under the portrait was a caption that ended with the words, "Many street families often wish they could receive a basic education."
