The sign by the gate of the Lutheran Church of
the Reformation in Beit Jala, West Bank,
yesterday afternoon, August 28, was badly
damaged. "Abraham's House" it said in German. The
sign pointed the way to an unfinished guesthouse
begun two years ago by this Palestinian Lutheran
congregation. It was to be a site for encounter
among "the children of Abraham"--Jew, Christian,
and Muslim--from this land and abroad.

United Methodists are watching prayerfully as
Congolese peace talks begin. For the first time
since the outbreak of war in the Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC), Congolese civil society,
government, political parties and rebels will
meet to prepare for peace talks.
This "preparatory meeting" is being held here in
Botswana, hosted by the United Nations and
Organization of African Unity which appointed
former Botswanan President Sir Ketumile Masire as

A demonstration by children of the old city of
Hebron was cut short this morning at 10:45 when
Israeli soldiers confronted them as they
proceeded toward an open area in the souk. The
group of around 40 children under the age of 11,
accompanied by some of their parents, prepared to
break the curfew that has been imposed on them
for more than 183 days during the past 11 months
of the current intifada.

I was asked what had been going through my mind
when I was walking twenty screaming children
through the old city while it was under curfew.
What was going through my mind was that I would
have rather been facing a herd of charging bulls
on a Colombian mountainside.

The United Methodist Church has been carefully
monitoring the current dialogue and debate
regarding the Bush Administration's Faith-Based &
Community Initiative. Recently, three United
Methodist agencies, including the General Board
of Global Ministries (GBGM), released a
booklet, "Community-Based Ministries and
Government Funding: A Response to Questions
United Methodists Are Asking about Faith-based
Initiatives."

ISSUE: Israel's helicopter gunship attack on July
31 on a seven-story apartment building in Nablus
killed eight people. Among the dead were two
children. The State Department strongly condemned
Israeli tactics as it has repeatedly condemned
Israeli assassinations. The escalating violence
makes it imperative that an international
observer force be deployed between Palestinians
and Israelis.

Sahour are quiet this morning, as are most cities
and villages across the West Bank and Gaza. After
a day in which 12 Palestinians were killed, two
of them children under the age of 12, it is a day
of mourning and burial.
