The situation in Vieques and Puerto Rico is very
difficult and tense due to the US Navy resuming
bombing of Vieques. Three persons were hurt by
federal marshals when they shot with something
like rubber-coated bullets to disperse the crowd
that gathered in front of Camp Garcia (the navy
base on the eastern part of Vieques) to protest
the navy exercises.

Landmines kill and maim long after hostilities
have ended and soldiers have gone home. Many
countries signed a treaty banning the use of
landmines more than three years ago. But rich,
productive land that could grow food and support
communities lies unused, marked off as danger-
zones. Clearing landmines is dangerous,
painstaking, costly work, and new de-mining
methods are desperately needed.

Native American youths are a segment of the
population about whom we read little in the
national press. Many of these young people live
in isolated sections of the country, with few
social services or activities in which to engage.
The result is a high rate of depression.
