In late September 1998, after Hurricane Georges
tore through the Florida Keys leaving 4,349 homes
damaged or destroyed, two United Methodist-
related childcare centers opened as usual the
next day, but the staff noticed a sharp decline
in children's attendance. This continued in the
days that followed.
Joseph Barker, executive director of Wesley House
Community Center in Key West, learned that not
only were the children not coming to the daycare
centers, but child abuse and domestic violence
were running rampant in the struggling
neighborhoods.

Fifteen months ago, church attendance at
Cornerstone United Methodist Church in New
Orleans, Louisiana, numbered 70 people. Today,
280 to 300 people come to worship. There are 555
members. However, Pastor Joe Connelly, whose
arrival sparked this growth, sees more
significant ways of measuring a church's success
than its numbers—ways that are manifest in music,
liturgy, and ministry. By focusing on the
gospels, the community, the worship, and the
spiritual life of parishioners, the church has
grown.
