A recent episode of "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer" on PBS dealt with seven places that were "off the map" in terms of world politics, according to the Rev. Wilson Boots. The seven places included locations in Asia and Africa. Latin America and the Caribbean were so far "off the map" they weren't even mentioned, he said. "Except for the conflict with Cuba, natural disasters and the drug war in Colombia, they've been forgotten after the Cold War of the '70s and '80s."

Although the world's media are providing round- the-clock coverage of a war which seems to be nearing its end, aid workers here on the Afghanistan border report growing frustration that they are still unable to provide assistance to most of the Afghans left at risk throughout the besieged country.

Dear Friends, The following is a press release from Gush Shalom, one of the still active Israeli peace groups. After the killing of the 5 Palestinian children in Gaza on Thursday, they too are renewing the call for the placement of International Observers between the two peoples. For the sake of the children - whether Muslim, Jewish or Christian – may we continue to advocate for such options. Sincerely, Rev. Sandra Olewine, United Methodist Liaison - Jerusalem

Native Americans Connect with Ground Zero Ironworkers
Debris removal at the site of the World Trade Center, October 13, 2001.

They came to ground zero to make a connection, Native American to Native American. They came bearing the scars of another terrorist attack, the Oklahoma City bombing, to seek out those whose tribe had helped create the twin towers of steel and now were removing the beams that had melted into unnatural shapes. And they left, the volunteers from the United Methodist Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference (OIMC), with the conviction that "our bonds of love are stronger than the bonds of hate," according to the Rev. Anita Phillips.

Rev. Sandra Olewine, a missionary in Jerusalem, sends her thoughts:

Dear Friends, After yesterday's speech by Colin Powell, I admit I am wrestling with feelings of dismay, apathy and cynicism. One could only have found that speech to be a positive step for this region if one was in the seat of power and not living under the brutal realities of Israeli occupation. After a long lists of 'musts' directed at Palestinians, Mr.. Powell seemed it difficult to find the words to create an equal list of unequivocal musts' for Israel.

Pakistan. Through its ACT partners, UMCOR is sending family shelter kits to
Afghan refugees in Peshawar and other areas. The kits include a family
tent, tarp, plastic ground sheet and four blankets.
While the dramatic collapse of the Taliban has raised hope that humanitarian aid can be moved quickly to millions of Afghan civilians who face hunger, aid workers on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan say they are still unable to get food and other emergency supplies through to those who need them.

After surviving years of drought, land mines, and chronic internecine fighting, war-weary Afghans now face a chaotic future as feuding warlords carve their country into separate fiefdoms.

"We were here when the Russians were finally thrown out, and there was an immense hope that things were going to get better, that peace was coming soon, that we could finally get on with development," said Kjell Godtfredsen, director of the emergency program in Pakistan for Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), in a mid-November interview.

Dear Friends, Below is a commentary which I think highlights some of the very questions which have to be asked and responded to if the situation here in the land which longs to be holy is to be truly changed for the better. It is written by a Palestinian-American, Sam Bahour, currently living in Ramallah.
Amidst all the political rhetoric and sound bytes, the basic issues can easily be hidden.

Action Alert! Economic Stimulus and Economic Justice
The Senate has been charged by President Bush with putting an economic stimulus package on his desk before the end of the November. A part of our Thanksgiving this year can be to help rebuild our efforts toward economic justice. There is still time for our Senators to pass a decent stimulus bill that will help the 700,000 people who lost their jobs last month and those who were already unemployed as a result of the current crisis.

Muslim theologian Dr. Farid Esack proposed reviving the Abyssinian paradigm as a way to move forward with Muslim-Christian relations at a recent General Board of Global Ministries Staff Briefing.
In the early stage of Islam, followers of the new religion experienced such great persecution in Mecca that the Prophet Muhammad advised them to move to Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The Christian king of Abyssinia received them with sympathy, and for several years Muslims lived with their Christian neighbors in peace.

It seems that enough interest is there to start another round of negotiations between the Palestinian National Authority and the government of Israel. Arafat expressed interest, Sharon already established a negotiating team, and Blair is visiting both and asserting the need to go back to the negotiations table. On the other hand, and while it is evident that the PNA is doing its utmost to reduce the level of violence, which might not be enough, Israel is escalating its campaign of executions.
