Commissioning of Missionaries Service at October General Board of Global Ministries Board of Directors Meeting.
Twenty one individuals were commissioned by the Board of Global Ministries as missionaries or deaconesses charged with taking the Gospel of the Lord into the world on behalf of the United Methodist Church. The service of commissioning was held Oct. 24 at the Stamford Marriott during the Board's Annual Meeting.

A network TV journalist told grieving Washingtonians that the longing for national unity should not cause Americans to blind themselves to the realities of war.

Judith A. Olin, director of Connectional Ministries of the East Ohio Annual Conference participated in the Global Ministries-sponsored mission study travel seminar to Africa in the year 2000. So moved was she by the experience that more than a year later she continues to interpret and lend strong support to the United Methodist bishops' appeal, "Hope for the Children of Africa". One of her significant contribution is NYARDZO: Comfort and Consolation, a book of meditations that speaks of her experience in Africa.

Africa University forges ties with school in Mozambique 
A new linkage agreement with Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique is already bearing fruit for Africa University. The Instituto Camões, a cultural agency with headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal, has agreed to provide funds to support a full-time lecturer to teach Portuguese at the Mutare school. The lecturer will be based in the languages department at Africa University's Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. Africa University is working with Eduardo Mondlane University to identify and recruit the lecturer.

LONG WALK -- Parents prepare to walk their children to the Holy Cross Catholic Primary School in North Belfast, Northern Ireland, under the protection of British soldiers. Parents and students must walk through a gauntlet of Protestant residents. Local protesters who line the road want parents and students from the Catholic school to use an alternative route away from the Protestant area that borders the front of the school.
The air horns and whistles began to blare just beyond the wall of tanks and British soldiers blockading the street. A mother tending a small toddler in a stroller visibly flinched and quickly made the sign of the cross. Another woman covered her ears and grimaced.

Cambodian Methodist congregations in Cambodia and around the world now will be able to sing and worship from a hymnal written in the Khmer language and composed mainly of songs that reflect their culture.
