Would you walk dirt roads, ride a small boat,
forge-knee deep across flood waters, or ride a
tractor for a radio? That's exactly what
volunteers did to deliver radios to displaced
people in Mozambique. Devastating floods have left
thousands and thousands of people with no means of
receiving vital survival information in the
settlement camps. When fleeing for their lives,
almost none of the flood victims took radios with
them. The few who did soon had no battery power left.

According to Congolese government officials and
several humanitarian organizations operating in
the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an
estimated 10 percent of the Congolese population
(5 million people) is infected with the Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes the
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

As the war between Congolese government soldiers
continues against Rwandan and Ugandan-backed
rebels, Congolese religious leaders representing
Muslims and Christians, including The United
Methodist Church, recently organized a forum to
"identify causes of the war and obstacles to
peace" in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A real "hands-on" approach to mission was
demonstrated during the April 3-6 United Methodist
Board of Global Ministries meeting when each
director was given a wind-up radio to use as a
fund-raising tool.
